You should get your shit together and realize that autism is a real thing that some people really have and are really affected by, that's what you should do.

God, I hate when people go "I don't believe in X disorder because some people who claim to have it were meeeeeean to me!" Fuck you. Don't react to an ass by being an even bigger ass. Autism isn't an excuse to be a dick... and neither is your simpering disbelief.

"Don't react to an ass by being an even bigger ass."

Take your own advice much?

Eh.

I disagree with OP in that I would be reluctant to disbelieve every person with autism on the internet. A lot of autistic people are on the internet.

I just wouldn't' change my behavior in the slightest when dealing with them. Autistic assholes are still assholes.

A lot of autistic people are on the internet.

They're the ones who don't bring it up unless it's actually relevant to the conversation.

Not necessarily so with assholes.

There are people who actually have a disability and use it as an excuse.

OP doesn't have to be dismissive of others.

There's a difference between treating an asshole the same regardless of their mental state and saying I don't believe any autistic people exist (on the Internet-- but they exist irl? That logic doesn't follow.).

It's similar to saying "I found out this girl I was talking to was actually a guy. I'll never believe girls exist on the internet again." But, worse, because people on the autism spectrum get accused of faking it all the time.

That part the secret rubbed me the wrong way, despite the fact that I think what other person did to the OP was some serious dickery.

Wait. There are GIRLS ON THE INTERNET?!

No, no see G.I.R.L stands for Guy In Real Life.

^ this. 60000% this.

Really fucking tired of the whole "you're autistic OR you're an asshole" thing. I've known plenty of genuinely autistic assholes. It's why "HOMG YOU'RE BOTH AUTISTIC YOU'LL BE INSTANT BEST BUDS" is so fucking annoying when people pull it. (And they do pull it. Even though it's about as likely to work out as "HOMG YOU BOTH USE WHEELCHAIRS YOU SHOULD LOOOOVE EACH OTHER".)

I would be bitter about "all those people self-diagnosing themselves with Asperger's" because that seems to be the superduper trendy thing to hate on right now, but honestly, the vast majority of autistic people I've known—assholes included—were diagnosed as small children.

Oh wait now it's time for the scheduled "well that's just because your parents were rich and wanted an excuse for their bad parenting"! Because it's SO EASY to get a diagnosis of autism on a small child, AMIRITE

...tl;dr been there, done that, got a closet full of the fucking t-shirts.

AGREED. I was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at six, but only because my parents had a referral from my child-psychologist aunt (who insisted I had a non-verbal learning disorder). Quite honestly, the diagnosis has been my saving grace - I've been in therapy since, and my parents have done a lot to get me the resources I need to learn to interact productively with others. Parents don't just...up and decide to do that one day. Diagnoses of autism aren't OTC medications, FFS.

However, I do get pissed off when a neurotypical person refers to Asperger Syndrome as a "disability." Um...it's explicitly described as high-functioning autism, high enough that people who have it can engage in "normal" activities without too much physiological and mental torment. It's really, really not. Severe autism? Oh, definitely. But for Asperger's...having a brain that works slightly differently doesn't make you any less able than any other person.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Its less "disability" and more "quirk" in my experience.

Eventually you get used to dealing with people whose minds work differently and you adapt. Some people can't even tell.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
So because this person *claims* to be autistic, that gives them license to be a stalking creeper who sends a three page FLAME in response to concrit?

Nope. Sorry. Don't buy it.

Thing is though? The people I know IRL who HAVE autism, usually Asperger's, DON'T ACT LIKE TOTAL FUCKING DICKS TO PEOPLE, ONLINE OR OFF, AND THEN USE THAT AS THEIR CRUTCH TO GET OUT OF BEING A DICK.

So, I'm with OP in not believing people when they say they're autistic online, ESPECIALLY when they've been a huge bag of dicks to others.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. The minute it's brought up as a defense for being called out, I call shenanigans.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
There are plenty of peope who hide behind their diagnosis. How about you concentrate on the part where they're being a dick instead of doubting what they say about their medical background?
otakugal15: (Default)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-09-13 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Won't believe it until I either meet them or they feel comfortable enough to prove it in some way. I won't take their word for it.

Granted, if they ARE autistic in some way, the yes, I'll call them out for being a dick. But hiding behind a diagnosis will make me doubt it in the first place. So, no, sorry. Ain't gonna do.
