Not to worry, anon, the internet is filled with idiots like you.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm highly educated. I just think it's overdiagnosed.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't necessarily think it's overdiagnosed by physicians. I do think that people still have a tendency to look up a checklist online, see that it contains "difficulty socializing," and assume that they have an autism spectrum disorder rather than assuming that they're just socially awkward like 90% of the internet is.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-09-13 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
See now, the key point your missing is that the vast majority of online ausists have no actual diagnosis. Wiki'ing an article about the spectrum does not place you on it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's not even online, just in general. I think the critera for diagnosis is too broad. If autism were a big deal when I was growing up, I would've been diagnosed, probably. But I turned out fairly typical aside from some social phobia. It bothers me that what once was "normal kid" is increasingly "troubling symptoms"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
This. It's yet another excuse for parents who never should've been parents to make doctors raise their kids.

Oh, man. When I was complaining upthread that someone was going to pull this classic, I was kind of hoping that I was being overly paranoid. I guess not! Someone will ALWAYS PULL THIS SHIT.

*sigh* Mommy and Daddy didn't hug you enough as a child, did they?

Oh, SHUT UP. Wishing you go on to have an autistic child so, so hard right now.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want children at all, "autistic" or otherwise. Sorry to disappoint, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You're probably thinking of Aspergers then, and not full-out autism. People with autism has difficulty learning to speak, does not keep eye contact and are not aware of other social cues, often focus on performing repeated actions - including actions that are harmful to them, and have a very limited field of focus. There is no way someone with autism would have been thought was a "normal kid."
manifold: Everybody lies, but it doesn't matter, since nobody listens. (lies and apathy)

[personal profile] manifold 2012-09-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
this. plus, the diagnosis is a fuckton more strict than a lot of people seem to think it is—there is no "walk into doctor's office, talk a bit, walk out with a diagnosis" bullshit. you get tested out the fucking ass. you have to demonstrate the sensory elements of autism, observed repeatedly. and then you have to repeat the testing and analysis every couple of years, because no one just takes the first tests and diagnosis for granted. you have to repeat it all for elementary school if you're going to get your IEP, and oh, repeat it again for junior high—oh, hey, it's high school, TIME TO REPEAT THOSE TESTS AGAIN—OH BOY MAN you're high-functioning enough to maybe go to vocational school or a community college! GUESS WHAT YOU HAVE TO REPEAT AGAIN JUST TO BE SURE YOU'RE REALLY AUTISTIC

oh, and if you're not high-functioning enough to go on to "higher learning"? still got to repeat the tests for SSI. you can be a total mute who can't handle loud noises, and the government will not fucking acknowledge it without repeating that shit all over again.

this is why I get so pissed off when people are all "omg it's so easy to get diagnosed with autism!" NO. IT IS NOT. twenty fucking years and you'll still have people acting like a magical cure for autism can happen at random! or, you know, like every single autistic person is faking it for shits and giggles, especially if you can talk or type on a keyboard. but we'll catch you, you fakers! even if you've tested as genuinely autistic since before you can remember, we'll catch you this time with this round of tests!

it is fucking ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
You can be highly educated and still an idiot. And you obviously are. Not only for the autistic disbelief, but for honestly believing you were the only one who thought that way.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly you're the bigger idiot for taking that literally.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly. Because tone and sarcasm and measure of literal is always obvious in text form. Clearly it couldn't be your fault, thus increasing your idiot level.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay. You're an idiot. You don't have to make excuses.
riddian: (ORLY?)

If you think it's "overdiagnosed" instead of "nonexistent" perhaps you should say so instead of implying you agree with OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I...don't think the OP said they think autism doesn't exist? Just they don't believe any of the people that use it as an excuse [that they've seen] has it? At least, that's how I read that part. -shrugs-

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
You read: "I have not and will never ever believe anybody on the internet who says they have autism." as: "The people I've met have used autism as an excuse, but I still believe it exists"?

Interesting.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Key words: "On the internet" and "Who says they have"

I'll admit, this is probably colored by own experiences a bit, but people don't tend to bring up autism unless there's a reason to bring it up - and in fandom that's usually 'You can't blame me! I have autism so I didn't know it was wrong to do it!' Plus 'I don't believe people who say it on the internet' =/= 'I don't believe it anywhere, ever!'

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Thank you. I tend to be skeptical of anybody who offers that much unwarranted TMI to complete strangers, and not just in regards to autism. Anybody who pulls the "I have XYZ Disorder, stop calling me out on my shit!" card gets the side-eye from me, no matter what XYZ Disorder is.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing, yeah people use autism (and other diagnosi) as an excuse. But did it ever occur to you that people with certain types of autism might be bringing up in seemingly random places where there was no reason to bring it up, might be doing so because they have some type of problem where they don't recognize or understand "proper" social interaction? Like, say, autism?

This is exactly the same thing as dudes in gaming saying they won't believe you're a girl until you show your tits because hey, no girls on the internet or hey, all "girls" I've talked to have really just guys using that as a ploy to get free shit from guys.

I mean this person in OPs story sounds like a jerk, but to extrapolate from that to say they'll never believer anyone ever who says they have autism? That's just dumb.

OP says they never ever believe anybody ever when they say they have autism on the internet. Not just when it's used as an excuse. Ever. It's not hard to conclude that they think it's nonexistent.

No. "On. The. Internet."

It's easy to hide behind a handle and SAY you have it when you don't. It's WAY harder to hide that IRL. So, you can fuck off now.

Eh, I'm not sure being skeptical of someone whose throwing 'I'M AUTISTIC!' out there when they get in trouble for being an ass makes someone an idiot. A cynic, maybe, but people do it often enough, or diagnose themselves enough that it's not completely out there to be a little skeptical [when it's used in that context].
