There was a comment on a thread in yesterday's post about how a fandom has a bunch of fans who write fanfic of a character acting like an abusive asshole, but treat him as though he's in the right. I've only ever seen this in bad guy/good guy (or actually, more bad guy/good girl) fics, but is it, like, a trope to write a good guy doing abusive things but portraying it as a good thing?

and it's prevalent as well in the "I don't even realise I am writing abuse" group of fic writers. he's doing it for her protection! it's all for her sake! like in twilight!

fanficrants you should find a lot of rants about those types of fics.

Apparently a lot of people either a) Don't realize they're being abusive or b) Think it's okay behavior.

I don't know what fics that person was talking about. That's not something I've noticed in the fandom.

I've read things that skimmed over unfortunate implications (like consent issues). I know Twilight is notorious for it's unfortunate abusive implications, but that fits a romance trope.

A good guy doing abusive things unrelated to romance? Sounds more like bad writing, or a failed attempt at writing an anti-hero.

(And I'm not saying the abusive romances aren't bad writing.)

I think it might be that old trope of one person making all the decisions, and being really cruel, and people thinking it's okay because it's "in character"? Not usually physical abuse, but the one character runs hot and cold at the drop of a hat, is forceful to an extent that would make any rational person quietly remove them from their life...

It happens a lot in House, for obvious reasons, and runs hand in hand with bad writing.

I don't know if you guys are talking about my comment about Captain America's portrayal in the movie fandom, but if you are...I don't really remember the fics from which I've gotten the impression because I've tried to block them out, but one stays with me no matter how hard I try to forget it.

It's the one where Tony is turned to a dog with means of communication and with all his mental capacities intact. It's the fic where Tony is thankful Steve didn't have him neutered.

And as about the other fics. It's those fanfictions where Steve completely disregards whatever Tony has to say, controls his life, says what he can't and can't do...and he's always portrayed as the good guy. Those fics have Steve treat Tony as an incompetent non-functional human being. And these are so common.

Some people don't see it as abusive, but I was trough a relationship like that and it's not...nice.

Oh, I know the dog one, but I've never been interested in reading it. I've never read fics like the ones you are describing, but they sound awful. It definitely sounds like ignorance and bad writing.

Oh, yes, I've seen those fanfics before. *shudder* I didn't think of them as a trend until recently. Those are just infuriating. Way to imply anyone who's eccentric or doesn't care what other people think about him is actually a non-functional child who is socially bankrupt and can't grasp simple realities or operate like an adult.

In fact, fandom's condescending attitude towards Tony in general, what with outright stating that his moderate issues and inability to be open about his feelings that stem from his bad childhood and traumatic experiences and guilt complex mean he doesn't know how to function in the real world at all and his issues are so crippling he's pretty much on the mental scale of a kicked puppy who has no self-worth or perspective and obviously would never have a semi-reasonable or sane reaction to anything makes me rage.

IL THE IDEA OF LOKI IMPREGNATED BY THOR'S MIGHTY HAMMERS, GOING THOUGH HOURS OF EXCRUCIATING LABOR FOR A NATURAL ANAL BIRTH, AND THE AVENGERS CHEERING HIM ON, ""WHO'S THE MEWLING QUIM NOW!!!???"

I don't think the abuse is necessarily portrayed as a good thing in these types of stories, but it's not portrayed as a bad thing, either.

By fanfic genre's do you mean a fandom-specfic genre like the "everyone betrays Harry and he gets thrown in Azkaban" genre, or a genre like apocafic?

Because I've noticed that with the former, a LOT of fics, especially slashfics, involving pairings where the two characters work in a hierarchical organization and one outranks the other tend to be full of "higher ranking guy abuses lower ranking guy like mad but it's for lower-ranking guy's own good".
