Your views on concrit

[identity profile] coffeeyoukai.livejournal.com 2012-09-13 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Since there was a secret about concrit today - how do the people of f!s take concrit (whether on fanfic, fanart, anything)? Does it make a difference if you asked for it or not?

Personally, I couldn't understand for a long time why people wouldn't want concrit. Maybe it's just because I've always taken writing very seriously, but I always thought that concrit was one of the best things you could get. After reading a few secrets and such on it I now get that some people are just here to have fun and don't really care about improving, but I still don't quite get why they would actively get mad about concrit. I mean, it's not like you have to follow said concrit at all. It's just that instead of just telling you how awesome you are (which I personally like, but find quite useless), it's suggesting how you could get even better, which is good, right?

I mostly think that if you put your stuff out there in a format where reviews are possible, then unless you've specifically said "no concrit," you've pretty much tacitly agreed to take the bad with the good. It's not really about improving, in my view--it's that people are going to react to your stuff, and there's something rather contemptible about saying "I want to know what people think--but only if it's unqualified squeeing."

Still, there's no denying that some people are incredibly condescending and nasty when dispensing what they claim is constructive criticism.
