Anon, I feel close to you because you wrote this.

I think people get so used to categorizing characters as positive or negative, based on what said characters do, that they forget everyone is capable of the whole spectrum. Villains can definitely have a broken heart, without becoming any nicer as people, and they can have feelings you empathize with, even if what they do as a result is incredibly destructive and bad. I think it's great that you love Loki exactly the way he is. And as you care about him and can see the ways he's in pain, I can understand exactly why you'd want him to be redeemed. He's awesome just the way he is, and unlike the heroes, you don't want him to change because he's evil or dangerous. You want him to change because he's hurt, furious, and alone. That's love. And if he doesn't change, he's still a character you're willing to feel for, connect with, and self-identify as a fan of. That's also love. More power to you.
