[The Circle/ The Engelsfors Trilogy]

What is this? I kind of want to read it...

Is it something translated from another language? What is it originally in?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I was curious too so I looked it up. It looks like it was originally published in Sweden (as 'Cirkeln') and has since been released in English (as 'The Circle'): http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12735457-the-circle

Hell to the yes to a pretty much all-girl cast. I'm so tired of bromances.

Tbh it looks like every other paranormal teen book that's saturating the stores. I don't look twice at those unless someone recommends one to me in a way that convinces me it's unique and more interesting than most of them. There are so many of those books out there you can't expect your favorites to gain the popularity for a fandom, especially for a reason like the characters' genders. Most people don't even care enough to find out if the characters are guys or girls.

Well, it's got six main characters rather than one, and they will get about the same amount of space throughout the books (in the first book four of them are the "main" characters).

They are very realistic (Swedish) teens. I've met people like this. I recognised myself in a few of them.

They're very different without there being one who is obviously "right" while the others can't really live up to her perfection. In fact, not all of them get on, and it's not just for bad reasons.

The book is very good with gay and gender issues as well as socio-economic differences in that it's realistic; the issues exist, there are sometimes problems, but not always, and there are no didactics.

The supernatural parts are actually scary, and the mystery not easy to solve. There are a lot of surprises in the book!

There's a fantastic subversion of the "unpopular girl gets powers and becomes the most sought-after girl in school" plot. Pretty uncomfortable too, in a good way.

There's also a teeny tiny Lovecraft reference in it, which made me smile (the authors are fans). XD

Well, I'm sold. Thanks for the review! This sounds totally up my alley. :)

Oh, I forgot; here is a review in English.

I don't know. I like paranormal ya, and whatnot, but I am so sick of the "Special girl who all the guys want and all the girls are jealous of, because she's magical and special and omgamazing" Even worse if the girl starts out as a 'ugly/wallflower' but then realizes how ~so perfectly hot and amazing OMG~ she is. Which seems to be most of the stuff that's out there now :/

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel the same, and I that was kind of what I expected from the circle when I bought it, because I just wanted something easy to read while I was traveling by plane. But it really surprised me, and it's nothing like that :D

I've read it, and it's actually nothing like that! Also, the story is about several girls who need to work together. There's not really one specific main character.

Oh, and if you hate the "special girl who all the guys want and all the girls are jealous of, because she's magical and special and omgamazing" thing (I do too) you definitely should read it; there's the most amazing subversion of the trope!

Well, I'm interested. I'll ask my library about it next time I'm there.

YES! The Circle secret <3 And yeah, I'd want an active fandom to. Everybody should read the circle <3

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't participate in fandom (reading fs is about my extent; other than that, I fangirl solo), but I'll keep an eye out for this. Always up for books with a bigger female cast.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rec the Darkest Powers/Darkness Rising trilogy books. Both series have female main characters. There's also a lot of female characters as well (Sorcerer/witch hybrid, fire half demon, shapeshifter, siren supernatural types, psychic demon hunters, telekenetic half demon, etcetc). The DR trilogy, for one, has a lesbian female character as well that isn't a side character.

Oh I so love those entitled fangirls who will always pretend that the evil male-slashers are the reason why their mediocre chick-flick paranormal YA style books don't have much of a fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But...Twilight is a mediocre chick-flick paranormal YA book series and it became huge. And there's barely, if any, male slashing in that

I disagree with OP; I think this book has good enough characters to have a fandom, and I don't think fans would spurn it because of their genders. I think the obscurity of the book (for now) is the real problem. Book fandoms usually don't get very big, with a few exceptions.

Well.

I bought it because HEH KINDLE. I'll know if I should be happy or upset later.
