i think the problem is that people don't like change and "lol hardcore fans" get angsty when good bands like MCR prefer to experiment and change shit up from album to album, as opposed to bands like Disturbed, where basically everything they do sounds exactly the same.

(and don't get me wrong i'm a fan of Disturbed but if you seriously think their stuff sounds significantly different from album to album you're deluded. casual listeners wouldn't know the difference for sure.)

i actually really like the fact that MRC has a different theme and sound with each album, and there's nothing wrong with disliking their original work. it doesn't make you a bad fan, it just didn't fit your taste.

Disturbed isn't setting the bar very high for a comparison, here.

Yes, this. There are always fans who get upset when a band's sound changes, but honestly, is it that weird for peoples' tastes and expressions to change as they get older? What did they expect to happen? It's fine if a band has a distinctive sound they retain from album to album, but that's probably not the norm.

I don't get the hate, either way. I assume it's just some lame way for people to distinguish themselves as being True Fans.

Any band worth listening to has at least one album that half the fanbase adores and the other half despises. Otherwise, they're not even trying.
