(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)I mean, yes, they share the "set in the modern day" thing, which is a pretty big similarity. And they're both adaptations of the same thing, so there's some commonality. But Elementary really seems to be taking the characters in a different direction from Sherlock; it really seems like a very different take on the source material.
I mean, for Pete's sake, look at the two Watsons: one is probably the most textual, straight-forward Watson adaptation ever (imo); the other is an Asian woman who's working as Holmes' sober companion. These are not really all that similar; they're two different ways of working with the source material, both of which have the potential to be really cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)Which is actually really interesting to see.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 04:18 am (UTC)(link)All of that can be textual and straight-forward; you say Asian and a woman like that would intrinsically alter her character. And Watson IS Holmes' sober companion.
I get that Liu's Watson is very different in character, but let's not point to her identity stats as the main reason, hmm?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 09:06 am (UTC)(link)never mind the creators didn't think a woman as a military doctor was believable and that they need to have her be 'fallen' to create sympathy for herOh! And there is a difference between a friend being a 'sober companion' and having someone daddy hire you.no subject
(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)I agree that Joan Watson is also different in terms of her character and her personality, and I certainly don't think that's because she's Asian or a woman. She's different in many ways. Two of those are her race and her gender.
