If people arguing on the Internets make you 'literally dry heave bile' into your sink, then yeah, you should stay away from fandom. Talk a walk, get some air, watch and enjoy whatever TV you want and I promise, no one in reality will really care.

Oh, for Pete's sake. It's just a television show. You're not defusing a bomb. Just watch the pilot already. And if you like it. YAY! And if you don't. Meh. Don't let anyone scare you over a show. There will be another Sherlock Holmes adaptation in few years for you to fan over.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No one's going to judge you if you like Elementary and Sherlock as well as other Holmes adaptations. Those are the people I'd rather hang around, actually, as opposed to some of my f-list that have dissed Elementary before there was a pilot to even leak.

And speaking of, I should hang around ontd_deductions more, since the people there are the coolest Holmes stans I can find on the internet.

Or just watch it and don't get involved in the fandom?

Normally I'd say check the fandom out if it interests you; if anyone asks if you like BBC Sherlock be honest about it, since by then they should realize you have an interest in Elementary too and aren't just there to trash it. If someone gives you hate just ignore their stupid ass.

I'd normally suggest that, but since it actually made you sick...just stay away. If reading about it is somehow that harmful for you, potentially being involved in it would be even worse.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch what you want to watch and stay way the hell away from its fandom. It's easier than it sounds, trust me.

I love BBC Sherlock.

I ignore fandom (mainly because I like my asexual Sherlock and don't go for the shipping that tends to happen). Also, I'm persnickety about fandoms.

I wasn't intrigued by Elementary because I though "Oh, great, UST, I like my Sherlock asexual" until in a previous F!S post someone commented that they said there wasn't going to be UST. Now I might take a look because, why not? Maybe I'll find a new show that I enjoy. I can roll with it.

Point: One can like both Star Wars and Star Trek. (Or BBC Sherlock and Elementary) - if need be, skip the fandoms until ten years after the show goes off air. Generally by then, the wankers have moved on. Generally (but they're also easier to ignore if they haven't).

I'm a Sherlock fan but I'm not always completely up to date and most of my involvement is lurking and reading fanfic, so I have to ask how bad this wank and this fandom war got?

I've noticed some of it of course, but it hasn't been that bad. Elementary hasn't even aired yet, so there isn't even that much to argue about yet. Most of the Sherlock fans I've heard from are a bit cynical and skeptical, but they're also willing to give this new show a shot. And the Elementary fanbase can't be that die-hard (yet) since at best people have seen maybe one episode.

Don't let stupid fen ruin the source material for you.

And ... I just have to believe that there will be places where reasonable people who like both shows will huddle together and talk amongst themselves.

Find them.

I'm trying really hard not to laugh. You got sick over whiny brats on the internet? Wow. Just...wow.

It's okay, OP, Elementary will be alright. I promise that its feelings weren't hurt or harmed in any way by those big, bad meanie poo-poo-head Sherlock fans! I also promise that it won't care if people hate it or talk shit about it. Really, it's all fine. Relax, take a walk, have a bath, calm the fuck down. It's just a tv show, for god's sake.

A lot of Elementary fans are also fans of BBC Sherlock. It's not a big deal. It's only annoying when people come into the Elementary tag and say things like "I know there was no way this could be as good as the revelation from God that is BBC Sherlock, but Elementary was actually ok!".

You do realize that the people perpetuating the terminally-stupid slap-fight are a tiny, irrelevant minority, right? They're just noisy. Stay away from the spaces where they hang out (not difficult) and there's still a huge Sherlock fandom that has fun and doesn't give a fuck. When Elementary actually airs, it too will have a big fandom that has fun and doesn't give a fuck. Just like all the other 90 bazillion Sherlock Holmes adaptations of the last 120 years - you can like some of them, you can not like others, and you can have fun and not give a fuck.

I don't thinking liking both is even going to be a controversial position once people other than over-invested wankers actually get a chance to see Elementary. (Even if it sucks - it's not like bad shows haven't acquired huge fandoms before).

Relax. Chill out. Watch what you want to watch. Find fandom friends who are mellow and friendly and not devoted to screaming at each other. You'll be fine.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
They're not even that similar as shows.

I mean, yes, they share the "set in the modern day" thing, which is a pretty big similarity. And they're both adaptations of the same thing, so there's some commonality. But Elementary really seems to be taking the characters in a different direction from Sherlock; it really seems like a very different take on the source material.

I mean, for Pete's sake, look at the two Watsons: one is probably the most textual, straight-forward Watson adaptation ever (imo); the other is an Asian woman who's working as Holmes' sober companion. These are not really all that similar; they're two different ways of working with the source material, both of which have the potential to be really cool.

I knew I'd seen Benedict Cumumberbatch somewhere before! (I watched Amazing Grace before I even heard of the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movie.) But I get what you mean about living under a rock. I didn't start watching Glee, which is so famous that my friends, who prefer to stay in the library with me (which is almost unheard of at my school) watched it religiously, until two years of their constant badgering.

Don't worry about hate from either side. There's always going to be some sort of fanwank going on. I find that ignoring the haters and staying on one specific side of fandom helps (I've lost Tumblr followers for liking both Sherlock and Elementary, and I don't regret it one iota. They wouldn't have been blogs I would have liked anyway, if their reactions were that hateful.)

I'd stay off of the tumblr Elementary fandom, it's definitely gonna stay wanky unless the BBC fans stop using the #elementary tag and calm down.

I'm not in the BBC Sherlock fandom and I hate the way they're acting, but I don't really want to argue continuously about them. :\ I'm gonna try and find an area in the fandom that's mostly wank-free and stay there.

Having lived around your neighborhood for a bit last year, let me say I'm sorry.

And if you were dry-heaving sick over a fandom spat, you might want to get out from beneath your rock...? Huntsville's kinda cool.

I got nothin' else, I don't pay attention to Sherlock/Elementary.

So by Untitled you meant TL;DR, right?

You 'have better things to do' but are literally sick to your stomach over fandomwank?

...I'd watch it, be awesome, and ignore the haters who do the 'HOW DAR U LIKE BOTH!' routine. Because, seriously. Someone whose going to hate on you/judge you for liking both adaptions [or, really, liking almost any tv show] is probably someone you don't want to be friends with in the first place.
augustbird: (Default)

[personal profile] augustbird 2012-09-14 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
i think you need to either take fandom a lot less seriously than you do or stop paying attention to the wank. i'm fairly immersed in sherlock fandom & i use tumblr moderately, yet the only place i see this wank mentioned is on f!s. don't go looking through the elementary tag. unfollow the people who are perpetuating this wank.

elementary can easily be judged on its own merit and you really don't have to let anyone ruin a potentially interesting show for you. how much fandom affects your opinions or interpretations is entirely up to you.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
uh, get a life? you take this shit way too seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
ugh. I don't know anything about this wank, particularly - I'm a BBC Sherlock fan, but not really involved in fandom - but as someone who's had vomiting-inducing anxiety because of fandom before, I really, really sympathize. That sucks. I know it's easier said than done, but I hope you can ignore the haters and enjoy your show.

And if it really is too much for you to handle, then trust me, OP, your mental health is worth waaaay more than any fandom. There are other cool things out there to enjoy, but you can't enjoy them if you're busy having anxiety attacks about a different fandom.
