Normally I'd say check the fandom out if it interests you; if anyone asks if you like BBC Sherlock be honest about it, since by then they should realize you have an interest in Elementary too and aren't just there to trash it. If someone gives you hate just ignore their stupid ass.
I'd normally suggest that, but since it actually made you sick...just stay away. If reading about it is somehow that harmful for you, potentially being involved in it would be even worse.

I ignore fandom (mainly because I like my asexual Sherlock and don't go for the shipping that tends to happen). Also, I'm persnickety about fandoms.
I wasn't intrigued by Elementary because I though "Oh, great, UST, I like my Sherlock asexual" until in a previous F!S post someone commented that they said there wasn't going to be UST. Now I might take a look because, why not? Maybe I'll find a new show that I enjoy. I can roll with it.
Point: One can like both Star Wars and Star Trek. (Or BBC Sherlock and Elementary) - if need be, skip the fandoms until ten years after the show goes off air. Generally by then, the wankers have moved on. Generally (but they're also easier to ignore if they haven't).

I've noticed some of it of course, but it hasn't been that bad. Elementary hasn't even aired yet, so there isn't even that much to argue about yet. Most of the Sherlock fans I've heard from are a bit cynical and skeptical, but they're also willing to give this new show a shot. And the Elementary fanbase can't be that die-hard (yet) since at best people have seen maybe one episode.

And ... I just have to believe that there will be places where reasonable people who like both shows will huddle together and talk amongst themselves.
Find them.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)It's okay, OP, Elementary will be alright. I promise that its feelings weren't hurt or harmed in any way by those big, bad meanie poo-poo-head Sherlock fans! I also promise that it won't care if people hate it or talk shit about it. Really, it's all fine. Relax, take a walk, have a bath, calm the fuck down. It's just a tv show, for god's sake.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I don't thinking liking both is even going to be a controversial position once people other than over-invested wankers actually get a chance to see Elementary. (Even if it sucks - it's not like bad shows haven't acquired huge fandoms before).
Relax. Chill out. Watch what you want to watch. Find fandom friends who are mellow and friendly and not devoted to screaming at each other. You'll be fine.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)I mean, yes, they share the "set in the modern day" thing, which is a pretty big similarity. And they're both adaptations of the same thing, so there's some commonality. But Elementary really seems to be taking the characters in a different direction from Sherlock; it really seems like a very different take on the source material.
I mean, for Pete's sake, look at the two Watsons: one is probably the most textual, straight-forward Watson adaptation ever (imo); the other is an Asian woman who's working as Holmes' sober companion. These are not really all that similar; they're two different ways of working with the source material, both of which have the potential to be really cool.

Don't worry about hate from either side. There's always going to be some sort of fanwank going on. I find that ignoring the haters and staying on one specific side of fandom helps (I've lost Tumblr followers for liking both Sherlock and Elementary, and I don't regret it one iota. They wouldn't have been blogs I would have liked anyway, if their reactions were that hateful.)

I'm not in the BBC Sherlock fandom and I hate the way they're acting, but I don't really want to argue continuously about them. :\ I'm gonna try and find an area in the fandom that's mostly wank-free and stay there.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)And if you were dry-heaving sick over a fandom spat, you might want to get out from beneath your rock...? Huntsville's kinda cool.
I got nothin' else, I don't pay attention to Sherlock/Elementary.

You 'have better things to do' but are literally sick to your stomach over fandomwank?

elementary can easily be judged on its own merit and you really don't have to let anyone ruin a potentially interesting show for you. how much fandom affects your opinions or interpretations is entirely up to you.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 04:38 am (UTC)(link)And if it really is too much for you to handle, then trust me, OP, your mental health is worth waaaay more than any fandom. There are other cool things out there to enjoy, but you can't enjoy them if you're busy having anxiety attacks about a different fandom.
