Should I watch this movie?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
IDC if there's stuff like this that are stupid or lame, but are there enjoyable parts that would make the movie worth watching despite the flaws (like Thor)? Or is it just boring and unlikable? I've watched all the other pre-Avengers MCU movies and I don't want to be deprived of important background info...

Hmm... I personally found it boring but I wouldn't say unlikeable. I didn't find Bruce's character very compelling. General Ross, the antagonist, was a one-note dickwad who didn't give a rat's ass if his own daughter lived or died. It felt like the entire movie was missing the ~pizazz or something IDK.

YMMV however. Watching it yourself is the only way to know for sure.

A lot here are saying otherwise, but I rather loved it. I took it for the fun ride that it was and enjoyed all the little references to the 1970's tv series.

I found it mildly enjoyable in a "watch-it-on-TV-if-there's-nothing-else-on" way. But Norton!Bruce was personally very dull and uninteresting to me (no knocks on Norton -- I blame the writers for not giving him anything non-plot-related to say) and...nothing really important or meaningful happened. There was no reason to care about the story. It was just a guy running from the military looking for a cure and then running from the military looking for a cure with his girlfriend and then fighting a monster before running again, while the military acted like boring evil tools. Blah. Also, forever bitter that there was no Rick Jones in it.

And...it didn't really have much of an impact on The Avengers. Ruffalo!Bruce is very different from Norton!Bruce so the character establishment isn't important. There IS a bonus scene at the end teasing the Avengers Initiative that probably had viewers intrigued back in 2008 but is pointless now (and is much funnier and cooler when it's viewed as part of the Marvel one-shot "The Consultant" anyway). Bruce's line in the Avengers about breaking Harlem is a reference to the movie's final battle. His suicide confession is a reference to a deleted scene. His ability to kind-of control the Hulk is given some precedent. And there's a sequel hook involving Samuel Sterns/The Leader, but that's a moot point atm and will probably only come into play if another Hulk movie gets greenlit.

I'd say the best thing about the movie was all the little continuity nods to the comics and what I assume was the Bill Bixby TV show (never watched it so I wouldn't know for sure). And the way the origin story/backstory was delivered in the opening credits sequence.

Yeah, that was interesting. It made the movie feel more like a sequel, and they were able to get down to business with very little exposition.

I think the opening credits were my favorite part of the movie.

For me, I went into it hoping for a giant green unstoppable rage monster smashing the absolute shit out of everything in over-the-top terrifying and impressive fashion and I got it. Those scenes were all just so much fun. As a bonus, I even got him in a fight with another rage monster and they fucking broke Harlem, which was basically all I ever wanted for Christmas. Plus it had quality actors, even if the characters were a little shallow, an okay script, and a healthy smattering of humor and drama, making the breaks between Hulk Smash fine enough. If you're looking for much more than that, though, probably not the movie for you.
