Pairings that squick you out or that you refuse to read?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
What are some pairings, whether fandom-only or canon, that squick you out or make you angry or generally cause a visceral Do Not Want reaction? Not just "I don't like them"/"they're boring"/"they're annoying"/"I think X would be better with Y", but something that you actually are grossed out by, or espouses an idea you hate, or you feel is so OOC that the pairing would mean totally fucking over one or both characters' personalities? And why? Do you have a thought-out argument or does is just give off a vibe you find off-putting?

Here are a few of mine: Draco/Harry, Harry/Teddy, Harry/Scorpius, Loki/Thor, Loki/Tony (actually, Loki/Any Avenger post-The Avengers unless it's an AU, but those two are particularly revolting), Kirk/Chekov, Kirk/Sarek, Sherlock/Irene, Ten/Martha.

Literally any pairing that involves someone who was in Slytherin. Just won't read it. Don't like any of the Slytherin characters and, more than that, it all seems to be EITHER woobifying characters who were mostly jackasses OR "oh look at the ~~~bad boy/girl~~~" and I don't much care for either of those. Don't care for it at all. No, sir.

Lily/Snape. Or Snily, yeuck. I enjoy reading in-character stories about their friendship breaking down, but when people try to throw romance into it it just makes me feel queasy. Especially since it tends to turn into a Lily-hate fest, EVEN while shipping them. It's amazing how misogynistic these stories can get.

Loki/Thor and Loki/Tony for me, too! :) I never tried any others, but those two (and their popularity) just kind of make me want to leave the fandom.

Snupin. And cross-gen incest pairings.

amen!

cross gen and incest (both together and separately) are gross to me.

Sandor/Sansa, Petyr/Sansa. All parent/child incest, regardless of fandom. From my anime days, Sesshoumaru/Kagome, because what the fuck the only times they ever interacted were for him to call her an object that belonged to his brother. Link/Ganon- Link/any bad guy whatsoever, really.

OH AND "SNUCIUS". I am generally against pairing up Snape with people, because I just dgaf about Snape, but there's something especially icky about Snape with Lucius. Or Draco, for that matter, gah. Snape/Draco crosses over into my child/parent squick because I always believed Draco looked up to Snape, so that requires little explainaton, but Snape/Lucius... I just don't get how a sexual relationship would naturally follow from their interaction with canon. The few times I've read a fic that had it as a side pairing it inevitably turned into making either Lucius ridiculously obsessed with Snape in an OOC way or Snape genuinely sycophantic to Lucius in an OOC way.

Giles/Buffy. I think anyone who ships it is completely misreading Giles' intentions towards Buffy, most likely because they think Anthony Stuart Head is HAWT. (He is, but that's beside the point.)

Gremio/Tir. I'm sorry, that's just too close to incest for me.

I think Loki/Tony is one of a very, very few pairings that actually make me angry just to think about, so that'll go at the top of the list. Straight-up noncon is okay, but nothing else.

Draco/Hermione, Snape/Hermione, Snape/Harry. Draco/Hermione would probably fall into that tiny category of makes-me-angry-to-think-about if I was capable of taking Harry Potter fandom more seriously.

Giles/Buffy. It's literally like father/daughter incest, and not in a fun daddy!kink way.

CJ/Tony doesn't squick me or make me angry, but I REFUSE to read it. It's complete and total DNW for me. *icon*

Lassiter/Juliet, for similar reasons.

Picard/Data. It's just...horrifying, for some reason.

Actually, most hero/villain pairings set my teeth on edge if I like the hero at all unless they have a very special connection like Batman/the Joker, (and unless the hero and villain knew each other well before the villain went evil or the hero turned good, in which case I ship like crazy because it makes all the difference. Like, I can't even describe. So, so different.)

Picard/Data. It's just...horrifying, for some reason.

Maybe this is because you find Data child-like and Picard to be his form of father figure?

I know that's why I can't ship it.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-09-14 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're definitely right...but it's not just that dynamic -- it's the specific way that dynamic is portrayed. Like, Picard has so much sway over him, you know? He teaches him about the world and about human behavior and explains how people feel and act and what's considered okay and not-okay and polite and appropriate and what certain acts represent and how to communicate feelings and ideas, and the potential for manipulation there is astronomically higher even than other parent/child-esque relationships.

Yeah, I understand. More-Than-A-Father. And Data hardly ever questions it too. So it's like: :/

I just have a big problem with power imbalances. Seems we're in the same boat.

Yeah, not very many power imbalance ships rock my boat. :\

Continuing the subject of power imbalances:

Shawn/Gus (Psych). Shawn has way too much control over every aspect of Gus's life for me to be comfortable with it.

Jack/Sam (Stargate). She obeyed an illegal order because she was in love with him. That's not a healthy basis for a relationship.

Hope/Anyone, not even if he's aged up (FFXIII). I especially hate Hope/Vanille and Hope/Lightning.

Janeway/Chakotay (Voyager). Sorry, but for one thing I ship them both with other people; him with Tom and her with Seven and sometimes the Borg Queen too. For another, something about the pairing just icks me out. Dunno why.

Elliot/Parker (Leverage). They're just too much like siblings, and sometimes he acts so annoyed and impatient with her that I can't picture them having a healthy romantic relationship at all.

JD/Elliot (Scrubs). I make no apologies for this. They were a terrible couple and should never have gotten back together.
kryptoncat: FFIX's Vivi is reading a book; magic is coming off of it. (THIS LOOKS INTERESTING)

Leonard/Penny from Big Bang Theory. I can't STAND Leonard and Penny can do so much better than a needy, whiny, Nice Guy.

Going with Harry Potter, it's definitely Harry/Ginny.

Nu!Kirk/Spock. Fandom ruined it for me when I was already not digging it to begin with.

Oh yes, about Nu!Kirk/Nu!Spock. I was already squicked out by Nu!Spock before fandom continued to ruin it though.

Batman/Joker. It's a pairing that just completely doesn't get or understand Bruce/Batman's character or the relationship between the two. (Also, Bruce Wayne isn't just a repressed gay seme male stock character, thank you fangirls.)

Vincent Alzey/Sophia Forrester from Last Exile, I tried shipping it because I really do love both characters, and OT3 them with Alex. Every fic I found with Vincent/Sophia however was pretty much "Lets force Sophia to marry this guy she cares about but clearly doesn't love while she'd still mourning the man she is very in love with!" It's just made the parring completely squicky for me.

Harry Potter:
Harry/Hermione, I just found them incredibly incompatible romantic wise in canon. Even the fics I found that that just had them as a side parring, not even the focus, that didn't out right bash Ron tended to completely ignore him, and I found that really off putting.
Snape/Lily, I just can't see it ever working after how he treated her, and some Snape fans treat her even worse.
Snape/Harry, once again it about how how Snape treated Harry. Snapes treatment of Harry and Lily is also the reason I hate "Snape is really Harry's dad" fics.
Sirius/Harry, It's kind of incest to me. I really prefer them having a Father/Son relationship.

Kingdom Hearts:
Marluxia/Namine, no, just no.
Roxas/Namine, it just rubbed me the wrong way from the get go. They had almost no interaction, it was a almost a depressing canon "pair the spares" with no reason behind it. And then they brought Xion(♥ Who is honestly the only reason I even played through all of Days.) in and Roxas/Namine made even less sense to me that it did before.

Any and all incest pairings. And they don't even have to be blood-related; if the characters interact and function basically as a family, then shipping the members feels way too close to incest for me. So pretty much all the inter-Batfamily ships are a Do Not Want, especially Bruce/any of the Robins.

Snape/Lily and Gale/Katniss (Hunger Games) have unfortunate creepy Nice Guy vibes to them for me.

Gilgamesh/Saber (Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero) goes a step further into full on creepy stalker rapist vibes. Ugh.
