It doesn't help when the dub voice actors pronounce their names wrong too. Though that's less common than it used to be, I think.

It makes me shake my head when I hear names mispronounced in anime, because then everyone thinks it's the right way to pronounce them, and then people get all upset when you try to correct them: "But it's the way they say it on the anime!"

I always think of Cardcaptor Sakura (the Cardcaptors dub) with Suh-KOO-ruh

Same here. That was embarrassing when I found out I'd been saying it wrong for years.

Wasn't Tomoyo renamed Madison for that one?

Haha, when the "Naruto" dub that used the correct pronunciation debuted, it was such a revelation for me.

Thank god they mostly stopped where I live. I recently watched Sailor Moon with my brother, and he's still young so he doesn't speak English well enough to follow the subtitles. So, we hunted down the German dub. My ears. Mi-NAA-ko. Ha-RUU-ka. Mi-CHI-Ru. Sah-ja. (Though I don't blame them for not realising that when it's written "ei", it's actually pronounced with an "eh" sound. In German, "ei" is automatically pronounced with an "ah" sound.) Also, Tah-i-ki, because they didn't get that an "ai" is actually one sound, just like we pronounce it ourselves. And for some reason, from season 2 or 3 on, they started pronouncing Tuxedo Mask phonetically. Too-xeh-doh Mahsk. Ahh, the 90s. Thank god by the time Detective Conan started airing, they started pronouncing everything properly, more or less.

On the other hand, there's still Yugioh's "Ba-KUU-ra". But I'll blame this one on the American dub, who changed all the names in the first place.
