YANA.

If you're reading manga and you've never heard the names out loud, okay you get a pass. But if you watch the anime and then say characters' names wrong, WTF.

WTF?

It doesn't help when the dub voice actors pronounce their names wrong too. Though that's less common than it used to be, I think.

... on one hand I can understand the frustration (because yes it would be nice if people pronounced things correctly). On the other as someone with both a hearing loss and a speech impediment I can also understand how difficult it might be to pronounce certain words. The issues with a speech impediment should be obvious but a hearing loss makes it more difficult if you can't fully hear/understand how something is supposed to sound and reproduce the pronunciation correctly.

I facepalmed so hard when Sheldon pronounced it that way on TBBT.

Words like anime, manga, and karaoke, karate etc. are normally mispronounced because those mispronunciations have become colloquial to English speakers.

But the phonetics of Japanese are very simple so it's confusing when so many people butcher Japanese names/words and make them sound much more confusing/complicated than they need to be. Especially when they've already heard the name/word pronounced.

Apparently I'll be the odd man out, but:

If I'm speaking Japanese, I'll pronounce it correctly. But if I'm speaking English or some other language, I'll say it in a way that meshes with that particular language's accent. For example, unless I'm speaking French, I won't pronounce Paris with a silent s.

Urgh, it's not just a Weeaboo thing. There were newscasters calling it the 'Kai-yo-to Protocol' all over the place. It was really annoying. It's in the dubs as well. I remember watching an episode of Inuyasha on adult swim and noticing that they had somehow managed to mispronounce every. single. name. on the show. It was sorta impressive, in a sad, annoying way.

OP needs to get over themselves. Pronouncing the words in perfect Japanese doesn't make you a bigger fan or mean you enjoy it more.
Stop being so pretentious.

When speaking English do you always put the stress on the end of French origin words (information, speciality, fiancee) while putting the stress on the start of Germanic words? Didn't think so.

And this is why I don't talk about manga with anyone in real life. I can't even pronounce English words half the time--it's way too much goddamn effort with another language that people will judge me for even trying to use.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who speaks Japanese, of course it does grate a little when people mispronounce words. But I've gotten over being defensive about it - to be honest, most hardcore anime nerds who attack others for wrong pronunciation also, ironically, can't pronounce them right worth shit.

Additionally, you'll notice that Japanese voice actors, etc., don't even TRY to pronounce English correctly. For every English actor that says Toe-Ki-Yo, all Japanese actors will say Nyuu-Yoruku-Shiti.

Now I think, as someone said above, if the pronunciation has been adapted in a way that sounds right for the language you're speaking, fly with it. Whatever.

There are also learning and speech disabilities that might be at play, so maybe you shouldn't judge? If it bugs you so much you can always find a nice way to tell them how its supposed to pronounced.

It isn't exactly fun when your brain can only find way one to wrap around a word and you find out later that you've been saying it wrong for years. I know personally I've had to practice saying some words just to deprogram my brain from saying something wrong and was in speech therapy for my pre-school and elementary days.

So give them the benefit of the doubt and try helping them out?

Because obviously how well you pick up on pronunciations is indicative of how "true" of a fan you are to something.

Obviously.

Not like completely misunderstanding the plot of the series, or just pretending to like a thing to fit in. No. Pronunciations. This shit right here's super important. Take notes, you fandom wannabes.
Otherwise, this random person might now consider you a TRUE fan. And we just can't have that.

The thing with 'anime' and 'manga' though is that I can't say either correctly without over-stressing the 'ah' sound and it's kind of a pain on my throat. Idk why, I assume it's because I mispronounced it for so long before I heard it said correctly. And rolling the Rs is a pain in the throat too.

Sometimes I read a manga and mispronounce the names in my head and don't realize till I see some of the anime, so I think that should be taken into account.

Kinda OT but some names like Eureka from Eureka 7 I won't even try to pronounce because even hearing it out loud doesn't make sense. Maybe that's just the dub though.

Depends entirely on whether or not they openly give a shit about learning Japanese, to me. If no, then who cares? You could say that about the names of a lot of characters in foreign language materials. I've pretty much never in my life heard a Resident Evil fan pronounce "Mikhail" correctly, but I don't give a shit. I bet you wouldn't either. (Besides, McKyle is hilarious.)

But if they do give a shit about learning Japanese, I'll correct them. Otherwise, imagine how you'd feel if you had a Chinese friend following you around, rolling their eyes, sighing, and correcting your tones every single time you said any name in Mandarin. If you were learning Mandarin I get you would appreciate it. If you weren't, you'd want them to fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree with this whole secret, just because someone can't, or won't pronounce something correctly doesn't mean they love it any less. Some people have a much harder time with stuff like this. Not only that but why can't someone say things as they are written? I say mang-uh because that's how I've always said it and grew up saying it like that, it's kind of like the toe-mato tuh-motto thing. It doesn't necessarily mean people have any less right to enjoy something because they aren't flawless. I have the utmost respect for the writing and culture of the subject matter, but I'm not perfect.

People are just different, and none of this stuff comes with a user's guide of how to enjoy it. We are free to enjoy any form of entertainment as we see fit. I'm happy that anime & manga have so many new and diverse fans. Years ago I had to beg my local video stores to order new animes, and my biggest hope was that more people would get into them and they would become popular so everyone would get a chance to love what I loved so much.

That being said, look where we are now. We are able to stream and buy thousands of them online and we have a much larger fan base. I feel this is healthy and it is people with the elitist way of thinking that would be happy to run off these new fans, thus killing off popularity and pushing us backwards. I don't care how anyone pronounces anything so long as they know and love the shows and characters. That's what really matters.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Are you trying to grate my nerves on purpose OP? I agree that misprononciations can be irrating but your attitude of a pretentious asshole doesn't help.

Isn't anime a transliteration of an english word?

Like you're bitching about people not pronouncing a word correct to its native origin when the only reason it's a distinct word is because people failed to correctly pronounce a foreign word.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I...kind of understand the frustration, but at the same time...there are some people who are *really* bad at pronouncing things that aren't in their native language. Like...scary bad. For example, my dad? Couldn't say a word in spanish understandably until he was in his 40's - and that wasn't for lack of trying. However, he did have the sense to not try to say anything in another language in public because he knew he would completely butcher it. [To put this in context, we live on a border with a spanish speaking country, and well over half the population speaks spanish.]

So, there are people really are Just That Bad when it comes to that stuff.
