... on one hand I can understand the frustration (because yes it would be nice if people pronounced things correctly). On the other as someone with both a hearing loss and a speech impediment I can also understand how difficult it might be to pronounce certain words. The issues with a speech impediment should be obvious but a hearing loss makes it more difficult if you can't fully hear/understand how something is supposed to sound and reproduce the pronunciation correctly.

I think that would count to OP as 'trying' though, they specify people who don't try at all. You can't help it if you have a hearing or speech issue.

True, but it also sounded like they judge people as soon as they say they love something while mispronouncing it. For all they know the person doesn't realize they're saying it wrong and it would be more helpful to find a way to suggest the right pronunciation.

Mmm well as someone who agrees with the OP- I was the first anon comment there- I would consider that trying if they legit don't realise they're incorrect.

There's a whole other group of people who just don't care though even when people do correct them. I assumed that's who the OP meant and that's who I mean when I say I agree. 'Um you know it's pronounced man-ga?' 'Oh whatever, I don't care, close enough lawl. Omg I love main-ga so much!'

I don't even disagree with you completely - I would be just as annoyed with that other group really. It's just something about the way the secret was written rubbed me the wrong way. I think it was mostly the line about characters saying each others names all the time - because no that doesn't always help!

I totally get what you're saying, but if someone can accept that you're pronouncing other words differently because of a condition that affects your speech, they probably won't suddenly be all, "oh, she pronounced 'anime' wrong, JUDGE." And if they do, and they're decent people at all, they'll feel terrible for judging if you tell them that you wish you could intuit correct pronunciations but often find that you just can't.

+ 1 - because of a fucking speech impediment I have, I can't even say my own damn sister's name correctly (just call her Sissy instead), and I live with her and hear her name every day. Not everyone can pronounce certain things correctly, even when they're going through speech therapy, and it doesn't mean that we love fannish things any less than someone who doesn't have a speech impediment.

Good lord, now I sound like a damn butt hurt anon - but seriously, I hate not being able to say certain things correctly, and I know there are probably loads more people out in the world with the same problem and are just as embarrassed too.
