Words like anime, manga, and karaoke, karate etc. are normally mispronounced because those mispronunciations have become colloquial to English speakers.

But the phonetics of Japanese are very simple so it's confusing when so many people butcher Japanese names/words and make them sound much more confusing/complicated than they need to be. Especially when they've already heard the name/word pronounced.

This. I work and play in Japan, and karaoke gets me every time. I've corrected my bastardization of other words, but for some reason, unless I think about it and go through it suuuuper slowly, it's super difficult to not say "Care-eh-okay".
