no1curr. Applejack's not a representative of an oppressed segment of the RL human population, so it doesn't carry any implications by default.

you could argue there's an element of classism at work. there's definitely things that present similar accents that are, i think, problematic if they're mocking poor / working-class people for being working class. but i would basically agree that it's a matter of context and execution as to whether it's actually problematic, and i really don't think My Little Pony is problematic.

What? People with Southern US dialects are certainly the targets of discrimination within the United States.

lol

I'm a southerner and I'm unfamiliar with this discrimination unless you just mean that people with a country accent are sometimes considered uneducated hicks...but even then, I've never really encountered that attitude in my daily life or have really been discriminated against for it (I've spent a lot of time on the east coast and Canada, and if anything most people just think the accent is amusing/cute and ask me to say "y'all"). People with southern accents aren't exactly persecuted and I'm a bit baffled right now

You've definitely had a different experience from me. I've lived in the South for 28 years -- yes, I was born here -- and I've had a lot of people say, "You're from the South? BUT YOU'RE EDUCATED! And well-spoken! YOU'RE LYING." This is mainly from non-anonymous People of the Internet.

Don't even get me started on the religion professor in Maine who wanted me to "share my experiences living in the Bible Belt," when I passed by a Sikh temple and a Greek Orthodox church on my drive to high school. In a fairly small town.

Yes, um, that's stereotyping, which is dumb and majorly sucks, but is NOT the same thing as discrimination.
