The Universe gives me a sciencegasm like no other. Also relevant: Cosmos and Into the Universe: The Story of Everything.

"My 600-lb Life," a story about a woman and the years it takes her to lose the weight that's been keeping her close to immobile for a decade. She faces so many struggles I never thought about before. I watched this the other day and thought it was very touching.

OH, if you're in the mood for something viciously creepy, watch this (fake) documentary, Metalosis Maligna. be warned though, if body horror skeeves you out, you might want to pass this one by.

"Metalosis Maligna" is a fictitious documentary, by Floris Kaayk, about a spectacular yet viciously "disabling disease which affects patients who have been fitted with medical implants. Sourcing from such implants a wild metal growth ultimately transforms human patients into mechanical looking constructions."

Murder on a Sunday Morning is amazing.

Oscar-winning documentary that documents a murder trial in which a 15-year-old African-American is wrongfully accused of a 2000 murder in Jacksonville, Florida.

And Sex in a Cold Climate is a must watch.

If anyone is interested in insects, Microcosmos is a beautiful piece.

not really documentaries per se but the three hbo war miniseries (band of brothers, the pacific, and generation kill) are gorgeously crafted and stunningly portrayed. if you have any interest in military history at all, you should definitely check them out.

Paragraph 175 - The film chronicles the lives of several gay men and one lesbian who were persecuted by the Nazis

Guys and dolls - A look inside the world of doll collecting through the eyes of four men.

A river of waste - This documentary looks at the potential hazards caused by factory farms in the United States, particularly by waste disposal.

Home - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxENMKaeCU&feature=player_embedded The film, produced by the brilliant and ecology-minded French director Luc Besson, is the work of acclaimed aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, whose cinematography, covering landscapes in 54 countries, provides a journey you’ll never be able to experience anywhere else. Beautiful doc.

Life in a day -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaFVr_cJJIY Life In A Day is a historic film capturing for future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010.

Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe and Wonders of the Solar System, if you're into spacey stuff.

Also Planet Dinosaur because dinosaurs are awesome.

"Life in the Undergrowth" is great if you're interested in insects and other creepy-crawlies. It's at least partially available on youtube.

No idea where you could find this, but I saw This Way of Life at a film festival almost 2 years ago, and I still think about it sometimes. I like documentaries with no narration, where the interpretation is more up to the viewer.

The Amber Time Machine. David Attenborough tells of the histories of the animals residing in amber and gives a personal account of his experiences with amber. :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6eLvxMnKKY

National Geographic's Journey To The Edge Of The Universe. This documentary shows the wonders of the universe in a single continuous shot (or so it would seem) :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcfJoZG_GMo

If you're interested in American politics, or the state of racial relations in America (circa early 2000s, anyway), I highly recommend Street Fight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457496/), the story of the 2002 mayoral campaign in Newark, NJ. It's a fascinating piece of work and a very well-crafted film.

Another amazing story is Man on Wire (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155592/), which won the 2009 documentary Oscar. It's such an improbable but wonderful tale!

Finally, This Film is Not Yet Rated (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493459/) will change your view on how movie ratings are assigned and the group that's behind them.

topdocumentaryfilms. com

Has some bizarro stuff but there are a lot of topics to choose from. From sad stuff like The Bridge to scary as hell stuff on addiction and whatnot, it's really varied.

I rec'd it to several of my profs in college and they were really impressed with the content.

Aw, I'm sad no one watches the Science Channel.

It's a series, but Morgan Freeman's Through the Wormhole. More space stuff, plus they started covering philosophical topics as well.

This isn't my journal, but I thought the links to documentaries about Cirque du Soleil here (http://greywing.livejournal.com/372596.html) and gymnastics here (http://greywing.livejournal.com/369588.html#cutid1) were quite interesting.
