I'm also not sure if I agree that depression and bullying like this is over-represented in the media or in real life discourse. I haven't gotten that impression myself.
At the very least, I agree with you that there's a lot of misunderstanding over what causes depression and who can suffer from it.
I also think that people can be too quick to brush off any problems teens have as being insignificant. It's true that the teen years can be an emotionally tumultuous time for a lot of people even if there isn't serious depression or trauma, and that a lot of people look back on their teen years and and feel like some of it wasn't as big of a deal as it felt at the time. But it's not insignificant for someone who's in the thick of it, and young people can lack the life experience and wisdom to cope the same way that someone older and more experienced might. So I can't be annoyed with "emo" teens. Some of them are going through legitimately serious problems with depression or trauma, and others are still learning how to deal with growing up and all the complications that ensue. Either way, it's not something that deserves to be belittled.
