Yeah. You have to wonder at these people when they actually knowingly LIE to support their theories.

And even if it wasn't shopped, it still makes no sense because Clint and Selvig's eyes were a shimmery opaque silver-blue that's VERY obvious.

Pffff. Yeah, okay.

It's certainly true that some people read YA for nostalgia, or to make themselves feel younger. But 95% of people over age 21? I think not. Did you consider that maybe some of those people want to relax? I'm not defending those who stick solely to YA fiction, but there's no denying that adult novels aren't all great.
As for escapism, why don't you go and tell that to everyone who's out there three nights a week binge drinking? Reading to excess isn't healthy either, but look at how accepted " social" drinking's becoming and tell me that's not more damaging than books or TV or fandom.

Why are you judging a huge genre by a small group? YA covers so many awesome "decent" books. I can't tell by the secret if your friends just happen to like the shitty books or if you are just a huge snob and think of all of YA as shitty books.

I think you need to get over your snobbery and just let it go.

Ah the BNF, what a lovely phenomena.

Recently I've seen a couple of really huge BNFs sweep in to the tiny little fandoms I belong to and post so-so stories nowhere near as good as many others in the fandom and suddenly each one has ELEVENTY-MILLION GUSHING COMMENTS and is recced everywhere.

Really, there aren't even that many active fans in these fandoms so these BNFs have definitely imported their fawning minions with them.

No, I'm not a butt-hurt writer as I don't write myself, I'm just annoyed on behalf of the writers who are active in our fandom who might have been discouraged by this.

There's only been three episodes so far this season, and the third hadn't even finished airing when you posted this message. So, out of two episodes, you only liked one? Pretty good hit rate.

Yeah, wanting to relax = wanting to escape from the daily blah, and if what you want to escape to is the life of a 16 year old girl, it's a statement about where you are and what you want(ed) in life that you do not have.

Of course something like binge drinking is more damaging than reading any kind of book...but that's a straw man on your part and I'm not sure why you brought it up.

The moment you gave up a tv show

Last week was the season finale for "Drop Dead Diva" and I felt like it jumped the shark. This whole last season has been pretty lackluster anyway, so this crappy season finale just made me want to give up on the show.

Anyone else have that "moment" with a tv show they liked that just turned to crap? Did the show turn around eventually and become good again?

It happened in Lord of the Rings fandom, too. US fans got every fucking thing going, the UK and the rest of the world practically fuck all - and it'll be the same with The Hobbit. In fact, every time the US gets into a British fandom, you might as well kiss goodbye to the good stuff for anywhere but the US, where so many fans just take getting it all for granted. God bless the ones who realise how lucky they are, too, tho. :¬)

I just resent the injunction to "pull out of this thinking" and not care "about these things". The "Liking problematic things" article is a tool keep from internalizing negative messages from the stuff we enjoy, and to keep from being an asshat to good people to who like problematic things. It's not a tool for switching off our values and standards. If someone has this kidn of reaction to something, I don't think they should be obliged to switch it off just to prove to others how apolitical they are or whatever.
