...wtf is "JAWN"? Do I even want to know?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've not seen Elementary, but Jonny Lee Miller was fucking amazing in Frankenstein. Went to see that mainly for Benedict Cumberbatch, and he was great, but it was Miller's performance that haunted me all week. Damn. Dude can act.

I think the implication was that he'd been tortured, but yeah, at the beginning of Avengers he definitely looked like somebody who's had the flu for a couple days and was finally having an epic fever-induced power nap but then got unwillingly dragged out of bed in the middle of it.

Re: The moment you gave up a tv show

[personal profile] maverickz3r0 2012-09-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Gave up on Torchwood when Ianto died and on Doctor Who when Ten regenerated. (Well, I saw a few episodes of Eleven, but I wanted to punch his face in, and that's not conducive to watching a show for me so I stopped.)

OP seems a wee bit classist. I think OP thinks they are being feminist, but NOPE.

Re: What song is stuck in your head at the moment (or recently)?

[personal profile] maverickz3r0 2012-09-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Due to this video, this song. (Here's to Us by Halestorm.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't you know? Fandom is an American thing now.
We, non-Americans, should be grateful we still get to participate online.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, thank you.

No, "greasy" hair in and of itself does not pose a health risk - in fact, over-washing hair can cause it to become oily and heavy-looking, because your sebaceous glands will produce more oil to combat the stripping of your hair by the products being used on it. Oily hair can also appear in people who are under stress, have a poor diet, live in an area with heavy pollution, have fine hair, or who touch their hair with their hands often. Illness or infestations (lice, fleas, etc.) are not the primary cause of oily hair - oily hair tends to be a side effect of them.

We've been very carefully conditioned to believe that hair must be dry and lightweight to be "clean" - however, what is not said is that too much product and too much dryness will destroy your hair, leaving it frayed, broken, and poking off in various directions. Most of the hair advertisements we're used to looking at, particularly those featuring long, flowing hair that "gently" cascades around the person's shoulders, have been heavily retouched - stray hairs have been removed, hair shapes around the face have been reshaped, and hairs have been added in other areas to make it look more full. In some cases, the shine is also manipulated after the fact to create a belief that hair both floats and shines at the same time.

Fuck white people.

"Now to sit back and wait for white people to get upset and offended"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
............ "cis." I do not think that word means what you think it means.
Also, someone offended by (clearly and evidently) misogynistic lyrics =/= SJW. At least not inherently.
I don't think being offended by the lyrics of this song means you're offended by "every little thing." If you like the song, cool bro. More power to you. You keep doing you. Could care less, honestly. But don't ask the rest of us to not be offended by it.
"Women are strong" does not mean "women should never ever be offended by thoughtless and pervasive misogyny, and if they are they at least should have the courtesy not to flaunt their 'precious feewings' in my face. If they do, they're clearly man-hating, wretched people. Can't you just be a little less ~*sensitive*~ about misogyny, and just live with the fact that it exists and won't ever change?!"

tl;dr: I am a woman. I am strong. I do not want to kill men, or anyone. I don't care if you like this song, but I was annoyed by the evident misogyny in the lyrics. I have every right to be annoyed by it. You have every right not to be, but not every right to tell me how to feel. In other news: gaslighting, have you heard of it?

Yeah, I remember when the fandom FREAKED THE FUCK OUT when Sam had sex or almost had sex with with whatsherface (...Meg? was it Meg? maybe it wasn't. god, it's been forever since I've seen this show) because she was possessing someone else and they considered it rape. And yet most of them had no problem with destiel. hmmmm

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like your friends aren't the only people who need to expand their book horizons, OP. There are a lot of good YA books out there. Find a few and rec those instead.

She's got a ridiculously cute haircut though, and that's all I have to say about this.

Re: Favorite and Least Favorite Works of Prose You Had to Read in High School

[personal profile] calaidi 2012-09-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I liked almost everything I had to read (even The Scarlet Letter! i finished that weeks ahead of time. The Great Gatsby too) but my favorites were probably:
Childhood's End (ngl probably one of my favorite books of all time)
Anthem
Animal Farm

The ones I actually really hated and struggled to get through were:
Tarzan (omg so boring)
The Odyssey (sooooo boring ugh)
House on Mango Street (thankfully we didn't have to read the whole thing)

I liked pretty much everything I had to read in high school! Except Jane Eyre, which dragged on and on and on forever for me. Of course, I was in the English class that took three months to get through Animal Farm in Grade 11 somehow. So. Yeah. Painful.

Stuff I liked included Romeo and Juliet, Lord of the Flies, Hamlet, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, MacBeth, The Tempest, and Le Petit Prince which technically we read in French class but I'm counting here because I loved it.

but ugh brooding guy who hates people (and in fic in this fandom it seems to be mostly Iron Man).

Really? Huh, I must be in the wrong circles because in most of the fic I've read, he and Tony seem to be snarky immature bros. Which is taken a lot from his 616 characterization, tbh.

Actually, given how much people draw on his 616 characterization, I'm surprised more fans haven't jumped on the Hawkeye-always-fights-with-Cap-and-thinks-he-sucks thing. I guess the fact that movie!Tony is already a lot closer to comics!Clint in terms of personality than he is to comics!Tony, clashing with Cap included, they felt it would be redundant.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like a venn diagram here would be appropriate. Some people are arseholes. Some people are white. Ergo, some white people are arseholes.

.......WOAHHHHHH.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Also the principal comparison seems to be with BBC's Sherlock, and...hard not to be nicer than that guy. I love Sherlock, and I think Cumberbatch's performance is great, but the character's just a straight-up dick a lot of the time. xD

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who feels there's a lot of sexism going on here?

This secret reeks of, "How DARE she drop out of uni and do something smart/something she likes because then she's just like all those other girls!"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's been scientifically shown that people do not improve in their jobs despite years of experience if they are not challenging themselves. Emma has been phoning in her acting for the last 10 years it seems.

I love you too, anon.

I've come across this opinion way too much in RL to completely write it off but I mean, this is F!S. That opinion is the majority in a lot of places so it shouldn't have to be a secret. So why would they make it a secret? Oh! Wankbait! Makes sense.
