I'm sorry, this image is mostly just making me remember Mojo Nixon's most insightful lyrics: "And the blue people got Elvis in 'em, too!"

Christian romance novels. Bless. There was a time, not so long ago, when those ate up most of my book budget, and I can honestly say that even the most cliched of YA "paranormal romance" stories is not nearly as homogenous as Christian romance novels.

WHAT IS THIS PERFECTION?!

This brings me back to the time when that huge cunt Saeva fluffed up her beefcurtains and started flapping them about how Harry Potter isn't "Brittish Brittish" (her spelling) the way "Brtitish people are Brittish Brittish" and she hated "Britt-Picking" and she didn't have to submit to "Britt-picking", no Sir! Because Harry Potter, because of USA! USA! fan involvement, was at least, if not more, AMURRRRIHCAN! as it was...

"BRITTISH BRITTISH!"

Yeah, Cassandra Clare/Heidy Tandy/Dionne Williford weren't the only insufferable batshit Americans in that fandom with enough issues to go to war over.

As much as I love Antoine de Saint-Exupéry I can't stand Le Petit Prince, but I love all the others you wrote.

But we really should stop misspelling "color" (hint: it's not colour!) and "theater" (it's not theatre!).

I'm sorry for your loss, I lost my older brother 11 years ago in a car accident. I spent his funeral handing out tissues I'd brought with me, because nothing makes a funeral worse that funeral home tissues. We had him cremated part of his ashes are buried at a cemetery owned by me mom's side of the family in PA, the other half is buried on our property in a giant novelty beer bottle.

It made me think about my funeral. I decided I want to have a big costume party. I'm going to cremated before hand, and go as a box of Wheaties. There's going to be buffet, and party games, maybe a Wii, definitely a pinata. Everybody is invited, even people I don't know.

There are bigger fan events in places with larger concentrations of people. That's true of ALL fandoms (if you're talking about movie premieres or something, those aren't fandom events as such). There will be more fan events in Chicago and Boston and Seattle and DC than in small town X, and that sucks, but to some extent any event depends on how many people on the ground you can motivate to organize it, and if you have a larger population, you have more people to draw from.

The way this season ended was just too many contrivances piling up on top of another.

Yea, when you put it that way I don't feel so silly for thinking it.

and this seems like DDD really wants to keep the "will they or won't they" plot until the end, and considering they probably want to keep this show going on for as long as possible we might have to put up with this mess for a long while. =(

Again, I fear you're probably correct. If the show only had another season to go I'd be okay with them waiting till the end to get together, but IDK...this is probably one of Lifetime's more popular shows, so I think it'll stay on the air as long as possible.

Re: Fiction written for adults?

Others have recommended Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, so I'll just second them.

I'm a fan of Jim C. Hines, especially his Jig the Goblin trilogy and Princess series. Haven't had a chance to read his latest, Libriomancer, yet.

Also I really enjoyed Agatha H. and the Airship City (the novelization of the first year or so of Girl Genius), but again, I haven't yet had a chance to read the second book, Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess.

Does Ash by Malinda Lo count as adult fiction? 'Cause if so, definitely that. I hear that the second book, Huntress, isn't as good, though.

Carl Hiaasen is hilarious, and really gets the special brand of weirdness that makes up Florida, especially South Florida. He's one of the few non-fantasy authors that I read on a regular basis.

There's also The Dark Wife, by Sarah Diemer, which is about Hades and Persephone with a femmeslashy twist. Hades is a bit too perfect and Zeus too evil, but it's still a pretty fun read.

Yeah, exactly. I think the reason BBC!Sherlock is such a dick is because, to make him as relatively cold as canon!Sherlock, you have to make him colder and ruder, since we live in a colder, ruder world than ACD and his version of Holmes did.

Also, he and John have just started their friendship--a lot of versions we see feature them well into it, and they've known each other longer amd deal with each other better. And Holmes may have mellowed as he got older. This is a relatively young version of Holmes--Moffat says he's 10+ years younger than the Rathbone version, for example.

I don't remember very many off-hand but:

Favorites: The Taming of the Shrew, Moby Dick (the latter was abridged)
Least favorites: Catcher in the Rye, The Grapes of Wrath (both so dull)

Personally? I read a lot of YA books because that's what I'm hoping to write and get published someday, and it doesn't hurt at all to know your market--and to look at what's out there and ask yourself "can I do this better, and if so, how?" That said, I'm also really picky about what YA literature I read--I tend to only touch the "teen paranormal romance" section with a 20 foot pole if there's something everyone ever has told me "no, it's really a lot better than you'd think." Otherwise, give me dystopias and fantasy adventure.

That said, people like to read what they like to read and don't like to read what they don't like to read. If you're getting frustrated at not being able to discuss adult literature with your friends, maybe try joining a book club or seeing what sorts of forums are available online for you to discuss the books you're reading? Alternately, just give your friends the books you think they'd enjoy as gifts and see what happens.

Are you thinking about Ruby?

But, yeah, that's the strange thing I notice about fandom in general. Male rape is never held at the same level as female rape. For the most part, it's ignored completely or played for laughs. Like for example, on True Blood, Jason was raped by several women. Fandom's reaction was a big, "Meh." But something mundane like how Eric was mean to Pam and all fandom hell breaks loose. I find that weird. Or like on SPN when Becky had Sam under that spell. While she did not have sex with him, she sexually assaulted him in other ways. And at the end of the episode, Sam practically patted her on the head and said, "It's okay. You will find someone else." And fandom was generally, again, "Meh." Which, again, left me going, "Huh?"

I don't get it.

The sad thing is, before that episode I actually liked Becky. I thought she was a cute, harmless superfan. After that episode, I thought she was a psychopath who would do anything to get what she wanted. Who robs another person of their free will and then sexually assaults them? Not a good person, that's who.

Re: Funny/bad sex stories.

[personal profile] omorka 2012-09-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've been remarkably lucky, in that almost all of my bad sex has been boring rather than either funny or terrible. I did have one ex-boyfriend call me "Mommy" once during make-up sex, which totally broke the mood.

There was the one time my bf couldn't stop farting. We changed positions about six times, but he kept cutting the cheese every half-minute or so. Then he went down on me and, immediately after my second orgasm, I farted, really loudly, and we both started laughing so hard we nearly rolled off the bed.

I have it on fairly good authority that my brother once came up his girlfriend's nose. Never got the story on how that happened, exactly, though.

Just about all of the fanon regarding Loki's children makes me wince. The Coulson/Darcy/Fury = Fenris Wolf/Hela/Jormungand fanon that pops up now and then is especially WTF-worthy. Where did that start?
