OP here!

Thank you for not assuming that I'm some sort of snob or troll. I guess next time I want to vent about something I'll have to chose my words with EXTREME CARE, as it seems like everyone's misconstruing my words to mean that I think all YA is deplorable and that I have superior tastes (even though I flat-out admitted that not everything I read is pure gold, but I guess that admission went unnoticed...)

Re: OP, how do you feel about genre fiction?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here!

I actually have quite a few favorite books that are genre fiction. For example: I love many books by Neal Stephenson (Steampunk/cyberpunk), Neil Gaiman (fantasy, sci-fi, even YA! SHOCK!), Stephen King (horror, horror/fantasy), Frank Herbert (sci-fi), Greg Bear (sci-fi/fantasy), etc etc.

I also like some comics/manga.

My frustration lies in friends of my age (30-somethings) who insist I MUST read things like Cassandra Claire, but scoff at me for reading, say, Neil Gaiman because he's "too mainstream", "boring", and "tired". If I have to put up with all their YA recs, why do my non-YA recs get laughed at and ignored?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
omg THAT'S where I've seen him!

I was irrationally prejudiced because he wasn't the A&E Mr Knightly, what's-his-face with the amazing eyes, but he really did give a great and delicate performance.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here!

I think it's odd that everyone assumes that because I said I like to read things that aren't always YA fiction that I must be talking about "Lord of the Rings or Ivanhoe". I didn't realize that my favorites such as Neil Stephenson, William Gibson, Haruki Murakami, Neil Gaiman, Frank Herbert, Stephen King, etc etc were considered "stuffy" or "snobbish". Now I'm really confused!

Oh, don't act like you've never rolled your eyes at someone; it's not that big a deal. The point is: while I don't get my friends taste, I've never said to myself, "If only she would read something else for once!"

The eye roll is about as far as me caring about that goes. I don't dwell on her taste or anything, and to me it sounds like the OP might. *shrugs*

*high five* Grad students unite! (Well, former grad student here, but... yeah.)

And yes, that is exactly how I felt too. I loved the things I was learning because learning is awesome, but it really had some creepy side effects for me. (Some of the weird destabilizing came from what I was studying, some from feminist circles I was in outside of school.) Especially the critiques of autonomy. I mean, I do think that recognizing our interdependence is important. But personally, I felt I was getting "Individualism is a lie of American culture" drilled into my head so much on so many fronts that eventually I... found it destabilizing to my sense of self, and that was unhealthy for me.

I don't know if that was common, but I don't think I was the only one who ended up somewhat damaged. The feminist circles I was in ended up eating themselves rather dramatically and wankily, and I think the endless "question your desires/preferences," "don't whine when you're 'called out'," "always 'call out' what you see so you're not a bad 'ally'," etc. was part of why. We couldn't really help put become wanky wankers.

Mark Strong! I resally disliked Kate Beckinsale in that adaptation, but I remember enjoying him. But JLM has my Mr. Knightley heart; that dance at the ball? My heart literally flutters as I watch it. It's a flawed version, but I love it dearly.

The original fills were hilarious. Thing is when the jokes were past their best by date fandom always came up with new ones. (Ex. the night of "I am an onion" which was a mixture of funny and embarrassing for all the cooks on Tumblr asking why there was so much BBC!Sherlock suddenly all up in their onion recipes.)

SO WHERE ARE THE NEW JOKES? IDK. If only the fandom was not so busy cutting off its nose to spite its face RN.

Thank you for this, anon. I really appreciate being able to discuss this without people telling me that I was on the right track but then got selfish, or my privilege took over, or whatever. :-)

I do think that too much "examining" can make you miserable -- it did me. I'm a BDSMer who likes some porn, so there were always feminists who accepted me and more radical types who wanted me to examine this or get rid of that, or who thought I was trying to deal with a sexist world by trying to act like a man, or whatever else. And being around that kind of stuff -- well, even when you know "those are the extremists; these are the nice people" it makes you doubt yourself.

I don't think that never examining is a solution, though. I don't think that's even possible, actually. We'll always read or watch stuff and cringe at That One Scene. That's probably how "examination" got started. "I read this book, and it was great, but then the sex scene made me feel gross and disturbed. What else is like that? Oh, shit."

But there's "I wish I could like that book, but the sex scenes read like rape to me," and then there's "I have to make sure I read stuff that isn't like that" or "I love that book, but I feel guilty about thinking the sex scenes are hot even though they're a bit creepy."

And that's how I read the secret. Probably wrongly, but I thought it was less "I love the beat and hate the lyrics" but more "I like the lyrics being snarky and fun, but then I go 'Wait, why is that "being a girl?" and feel guilty for laughing." And I don't think that's necessary. I don't think being aware should mean giving up stuff we like. I don't have any problem with "Whoa, that's so creepy I don't like it at all."

Hehe, I can't say I have loads of experience with them, so I'll take your word for it.

Still, as long as you're reading, that's what matters. I'm actually glad she does read them, because she never used to pick up books.

One word: "Americunt"

Hard to top that with anything else in this thread.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I don't feel that strongly about cinema, but I really think that currently, America does have the best TV. Certainly when the comparison is to British TV (much of which I really like). Though a lot of the best American TV is cable, which doesn't normally have 20+ episodes. But even the standard 13 or so is more than a lot of British series, and it is generally on at a consistent time every year(unless it's a show on AMC, because they still haven't figured out contract negotiations. Whoops).

Okay, then I read it differently, as I said above.

DUDE. I don't know a few of those canons, but I'd still read it.

I've always wanted to write a Lost Universe / Slayers crossover fic, where the characters from Slayers NEXT end up thrown into the Lost Universe world because of things going horribly wrong when Lina casts the Giga Slave. I have notes and everything, about how characters from Slayers TRY would tie in to fixing things and merging the mythology from the weapons of light to the lost ships and how to get to the other world on the Sea of Chaos to help bring the others back. I know that logically the only real ties these series have are their author and the way that the 3rd season of Slayers botched things by creating relations between the worlds that didn't exist in the novels, but for some reason my brain thinks it would still be awesome to try.

My problem being that I have absolutely no time to write this, it's probably never going to happen, or at least going to take a few years just to find the time to do it. :( I need the willpower to crack down and work on it without neglecting all my other hobbies and commitments.

Crossovers are HARD. But I love them for exactly that reason. If you dig hard enough, you can find a way to tie things together. Then the shenanigans are so worth it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see what's wrong with their approach. I think it's a pretty cool concept to see how his character develops as he ages, which wouldn't be as interesting if he was like the Elementary Holmes. Likewise, it will be cool to see how Elementary handles the drug aspect of his character.

Because kink memes are the best place to judge what's going on with a particular fandom. It's a *kink* meme FFS!

I currently participate in actual online coms *gasp* for six different fandoms and we have no shortage of Het stories along with everything else. The Castle fandom, for instance, is dominated by het stories.

And yes, the explicit het sex sells an iffy story just as efficiently as explicit slash does.

I am tired of hearing how one thing or another "dominates" fandom. It really is a matter of trying to compare apples and oranges. I'm not an Avengers fan but look at the canon. Look at how many male characters there are to female characters and then be stupid enough to complain about the ratio of slash to het stories.

I thought the same.

LOL Ok, you go throw 40 to 60 thou or more at colleges that only could EVER have your best interest at heart :) And, in fairness, I'm speaking of American schools. I know when to speak of what I know, kthx.

Also quoting? Really? Do you know the number of quotes that could challenge that? Do you it's more presumable that you you just googled that? Here, I'll help: http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/education

For a good measure because I can totally C&P too:

"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."
― Confucius

"Study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in."
― Leonardo da Vinci

"If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library."
Frank Zappa

Next time, comment something of substance instead of something that can be refuted so easily.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Anonnie, you make me so proud. Thank you for not being a special snowflake but someone more willing to learn than those pushed into colleges because it's the "right thing". There are some who go who want to, yes. Many because they don't know what to do with themselves at all and that is sad.

The whole education system is fucked up, in fairness.

That's what you might think, but the people around you might view that differently.

I agree about overwashing though.
