Exactly. He even laughed "merrily", not just a scoff. And I think from time to time he let people off if they had sympathetic reasons for committing their crimes?

To me, Vasily Livanov felt most accurate to canon. He was serious but also a bit mischievous and cordial. (My favourite scene is the one where Holmes tries to teach Watson about his method of deduction. I laughed so hard.)
