(Yes, I am aware the vast majority of people in Boy Scouts aren't rapists, yadda yadda, just saying that's one potential intended insult.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)Part of the issue is that Boy Scouts goes up to age 18 (21 for Venturing) so they want to have it in place that no one sexually interested in males is around scourts on trips. You could say that this in itself is homophobic, but BSA also has it for Venturing that there must be at least one adult female or a parent of the youth when any girls are on the trip. Does that imply that adult men are all interested in raping young women or that women don't rape young men? No, it's just an outdated standard in place to hopefully cut down on sexual abuse.
The other part of the issue has been that BSA is grounded in certain beliefs, and they have not traditionally held homosexuality as morally straight and clean in thought, word, and deed. BSA allows prohibits membership to females (except in Venturing and adult leadership positions), agnostics, and atheists.
