I never really thought about it before... but what kind of insult is Boy Scout?
lunabee34: (avengers: cpn america by youcallitwinter)

IDK. I think OP means unthinkingly following orders? Maybe? Or unhealthily attached to a ridiculous looking uniform? LOL

a ridiculous looking uniform

...You meant a ridiculously fine looking uniform, right? 'Cause mmm.

Okay, it's plain ridiculous as well, but that doesn't stop me from loving it.

Heeeeeeeee.

Every time I think about that uniform, it's puddled on the floor around his ankles. So, um. Yeah. LOL

He's such an upstanding citizen. God I hate him with his trustworthy loyal helpful friendly courteous kind cheerful thrifty brave and clean self. And all of that "do a good turn daily" and "be prepared" bullshit. Total boy scout.

lol

Yeah, because all the transphobia and homophobia and covering up pedophiles is a good thing.

Boy Scout means you always play by the rules to a fault. You are overly good and nice to the point that you are wishy-washy, bland and harmless.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
...when did Boy Scout start to mean that, exactly? Because that's not the sort of connotation it carries in these parts. :/

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-09-16 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It really started in the 80's in the US with all of those cop shows and movies. Someone would always complain that such and such lead character was a "boy scout," meaning he was wishy-washy, harmless, do-gooder only for the show/movie to end with the "boy scout" being the action hero who broke the rules, killed the bad guys and saved the day.

It's such a movie/show cliche that I am surprised that people haven't heard of it before.

da

weird. so...it's a bad thing to think of him as this? or good? or its bad to use the term as an insult?

haha its been awhile since I've felt completely like a fish out of water with a secret. Definitely cultural context is important?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The bad part of the insult is the blandness and wishy-washiness, and subsequent passivity or boringness. A big part of it, I think, is that assertiveness and individuality (and in that vein, not just going along with rules just because they're rules) are emphasized in the US. There's also some connotations of being holier-than-thou about it, kind of like goody-goody, or Goody Two-Shoes.

I get this.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
In a prime example of reeeally awkward timing, today the LA Times had a front-page article about Boy Scouts of America covering for rapist scout team leaders. x.x

So, uh, maybe that kind of insult?

(Yes, I am aware the vast majority of people in Boy Scouts aren't rapists, yadda yadda, just saying that's one potential intended insult.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But I thought they only accepted Straight people because it's the gays that want to rape little boys?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
They now have a sort of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in place.

Part of the issue is that Boy Scouts goes up to age 18 (21 for Venturing) so they want to have it in place that no one sexually interested in males is around scourts on trips. You could say that this in itself is homophobic, but BSA also has it for Venturing that there must be at least one adult female or a parent of the youth when any girls are on the trip. Does that imply that adult men are all interested in raping young women or that women don't rape young men? No, it's just an outdated standard in place to hopefully cut down on sexual abuse.

The other part of the issue has been that BSA is grounded in certain beliefs, and they have not traditionally held homosexuality as morally straight and clean in thought, word, and deed. BSA allows prohibits membership to females (except in Venturing and adult leadership positions), agnostics, and atheists.

Just look at the Boy Scout Law:

A Scout is:

•Trustworthy,
•Loyal,
•Helpful,
•Friendly,
•Courteous,
•Kind,
•Obedient,
•Cheerful,
•Thrifty,
•Brave,
•Clean,
•and Reverent

The motto is "Be Prepared" and the slogan is "Do a Good Turn Daily". So it's a really good, wholesome person who is also apparently clean (that one always made me laugh).

Or cheerful:

Steve: "We have orders. We should follow them." *does the exact opposite*

That's why I like him so much, tbh. :D

A goody-goody type.

In the vein of 'Goody Two Shoes', I think.

P.S. I know what it's supposed to MEAN. I just think it's stupid to have an insult that means a "too good of a guy." I mean seriously. In a culture where we're obsessed with protecting women we're still using that as an insult? Shouldn't we be celebrating it.

Meh.
