I never really thought about it before... but what kind of insult is Boy Scout?

IDK. I think OP means unthinkingly following orders? Maybe? Or unhealthily attached to a ridiculous looking uniform? LOL

He's such an upstanding citizen. God I hate him with his trustworthy loyal helpful friendly courteous kind cheerful thrifty brave and clean self. And all of that "do a good turn daily" and "be prepared" bullshit. Total boy scout.

One of the interesting things about Steve is that his level of rebelliousness is perceived differently depending on what time or situation he's in, even depending on what size he is. I think he is a bit of a boy scout, but definitely not the type to blindly follow orders.

Rubbish. Boy Scouts have always been taught to falsify enlistment forms, disobey orders, and break into military facilities and steal top-secret weapons. Didn't you know that? It's like, right in the manual.

Sorry, didn't read this secret because I was too busy drooling over that background pic.

It just occurred to me right now that the pattern of that uniform is totally designed for the specific purpose of emphasizing Chris Evans's shoulder-to-waist ratio. The pointless tiny silver epaulets on the shoulders, and then the vertical stripes...

I must not understand what other people think of when they hear "boy scout" used as a pejorative.

Because I think Cap is a total boy scout. He's a good old-fashioned American lad ready to do his bit for God and Country. That doesn't mean he bows to authority all the time -- if anything, it means he's a ridiculous idealist possessed of an infuriating sense of duty, honor, and patriotism, and will always try to Do The Right Thing, even when it's Really Hard.

I dunno, man. I think Captain America is basically a boy scout writ large.

Fanon or Canon?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Something I've been wondering. So many fics have Rogers as an artist. Is this canon or fanon? I don't remember him drawing in Captain America, but then I was one of those who didn't pay much attention to the movie out of disinterest, so mayhaps I missed it.

Steve's not a boyscout. He doesn't rape little boys and cover it up. Therefore he can't be a boyscout.

When people say that Steve (or Clark Kent) is a Boy Scout, I've always thought it was code for hard working/always prepared/fight for what's right/follows the rules. And I've always thought when people used the term, it was supposed to show their lack of understanding about who Steve really is rather than be a reflection on Steve (at least the last part). But maybe I've been reading different fics.

However, I have to say my favorite fic about "Boy Scout Steve" was when, after Tony called him one, Steve looked it up and sees how the scouts are homophobic and discriminatory and gets really upset about it. In the end, I think it's Clint who switches to calling Steve a Girl Scout.

What is the whole "boyscout" thing supposed to mean? I know absolutely nothing about scouting in general except that there's a boyscout troop near where I live and every couple of months some elementary-school aged boys will come knock on my door and ask me to buy popcorn. Is it supposed to be an insult? A personality type?

Because if we're defining "boyscout" based on the kids in my neighborhood? A boyscout is an extremely hyperactive kid that is really good at guilting you into buy lots of popcorn. Even if you don't like popcorn. Like me.

I really have to wonder if the people who use Boy Scout as an insult have ever MET Boy Scouts. I mean, sure, they're supposed to have this code and everything, but most of them are just as rude and rebellious as other boys. I met all sorts of knife wielding psychos, pyros, and bullies in the Boy Scouts.

I hate the Boy Scout Steve trope. I've been reading a lot of Avengers fic and most of the time Steve is portrayed as a goodie-two-shoes that doesn't drink or curse and is a prudish hard ass Mother-hen when the rest of the team decides to have fun. It is like the authors are confusing Steve with the fifth season version of Arnold from the cartoon Hey Arnold.

In the movie, Steve disobeys orders, picks fights, curses*, drinks, and lies on his enlistment forms. Based on his conversations with Bucky and others, Steve is sarcastic and has a sense of humor. It is clear that he has PTSD and is depressed in the Avengers. The Avengers team are a lot like the members of the Howling Commandos.

Dum Dum Dugan- Bruce
Jim Morita/James Falsworth- Clint
Gabe Jones- Thor
Jacques Dernier- Natasha
Howard Stark- Tony

*Peggy- "You can't give me orders!"
Steve- "The hell I can't! I'm a Captain!"

Yeah, he's not very boy scout-ish in the movies, but I think people automatically assume he's like that because he's a lot more boy scout-ish in the comics? At least that's what I've heard. I don't really know that comics that well though, so I could be wrong, but it seems that in the comics he's basically the most upstanding and least loose-canon superhero in the community.

Captain America is a stereotypical boyscout character.

Steve is...not.

That's what makes him so fun.

It's actually a pretty interesting analogy when you look into it. There are two sides to the Boy Scouts - there's the amalgamation of positive ideals they hold high (duty, honor, loyalty, honesty...), but there's also the "side effects", the negative associations they often come with (blind obedience, bigotry, ect).

Captain America is very much meant to be the embodiment of all those positive ideals of the Boy Scouts. And Captain America gets associated with all those side-effect/negative traits in the same manner that the Boy Scouts ended up with those associations, too. In a sense, Captain America and the Boy Scouts in this context are ideals, rather than actual concepts.

Meanwhile, Steve both represents the Boy Scouts from the opposite angle, and subverts it. He tries to be a Boy Scout type, just as most actual Boy Scouts try to live up to those positive ideals. Doesn't mean they always succeed. The BSA certainly has plenty of fuck-ups to their name. And while it isn't exactly comparable, Steve also has many traits that don't quite follow the "boy scout" ideal - he'll absolutely defy authority, he can be sneaky or cruel when he tries, and it's obvious he considers the caricature of Captain America as a very separate entity from himself, and as much as 'dancing monkey' as most of the armed forces apparently did before he went and rescued a few hundred POWs from behind enemy lines - as much as he might like the idea, he considers living up to that kind of pressure and idealism constantly to be bullshit, something which in theory no real boy scout would.

It's funny, some people I know hate this film. But I beg to differ, this is my favorite Marvel film. His character has depth, and this film has a far better story than all the other Marvel films. His character isn't naive, and although he is hampered by a loss of time, he is quick to adapt to his current surroundings and situation. Probably one of the best characters in this universe, and certainly not a boy scout.
