I just don't understand it. I don't get being in a fandom if you aren't really into something.

Though by the same token I don't understand why you even care. If they want to be in fandom that badly then leave them be.

Plus if they watch videos repeatedly they may have a better memory for games then I do despite playing them, I tend to forget a lot of things unless it's a game I've played recently or if I go look it up on wiki.

This probably makes me a "bad gamer" but I tend to play games for the story. And yes, some of those I did get from let's plays back when I did not have the games console or for games consoles I just simply do not have to money to buy (aka really new ones).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
See I just never got into that. For me a game has to be somewhat playable for me to get into the plot.

And yeah I'm sure there are a lot of video games that have good plots that I am missing because I never bought the game, but I have tv and movies so I never really think to just sit down and watch video games.

But I don't label people "bad gamers" in any case because I just play video games for fun and I suck at a great deal of them, I think hardcore gamers who judge others are silly.

Honestly, I started watching youtube vids when they stopped releasing stuff for the PS2. Because I just did not have the money for any of the new consoles. I've had my XBOX 360 off ebay for a mere few weeks now.

Pretty much this. If the person can't afford the console and game, or doesn't have time to play the game or whatever, than I don't see what's wrong with watching an LP and then getting involved in the fandom. It's a bit different yes, and they might've not experienced the game exactly in the way it was originally meant to be experienced, but if they enjoy the story and the characters (etc etc), I don't see what the problem is.

A cousin of mine watched me play Portal a while back. I offered to let her play herself, but she didn't want to; she just wanted to watch. She seemed to enjoy it.

I personally would rather play myself because I find it fun, but someone watching an LP is going to get the same amount of information out of the game re: storyline and characters as one playing it would, and maybe that's the only part they care about?

Maybe they like the fanwork more than the source? Hetalia and Homestuck come to mind, especially when the fanwork can be so completely unlike and far removed from the source, enough that it can be enjoyed on its own.

Enjoyed is fine... but when some of those faux Homestucks try to talk, or worse, make THEORIES... They reveal themselves for what they are.

Anybody who reads homestuck knows why this is moronic... BECAUSE WE ARE EXPLICITLY TOLD THIS FUCKING PUPPETS WHOLE ORIGIN.

This is a mild, relatively spoiler free example. There's worse out there. Much much worse.

Dude. There are already so many stupid theories and headcanons that I can't tell anymore if they're from people who read it. Vriska redemption quest, guido Eridan, sexually abusive and incestuous bro, etc. etc.

The only way I know is if they go out of their way to reference POTENTIAL MACGUFFIN #3449 FROM PAGE 2356 MENTIONED AGAIN BY SOLLUX IN THIS PESTERLOG or some other detail everyone who doesn't study Homestuck would already forget if it wasn't for those fans.

TO be fair to them, I think incestuous Strider's are more the product of UST then stupid.

And in this case... there was several pages detailing this puppets origin! I think that sort of thing is harder to forget. But okay. There are also people who read it all and still have stupid theories. And who ask stupid questions about stuff.

But sometimes you get somebody going all "hey who is this character?" and it was fucking JOHN. Yes. This happened. So obviously an act 5 skipper. And I let the rage flow through me.

Somebody wrote a good song about it though.

right right, you're talking about the weirdos who jumped in for the trolls or whatever, and constantly ask "WHAT IS GOING ON? WHAT'S AN ALPHA TIMELINE LOL OMGOG???"
I still bet that they're in it for the fic and art, and even if you explain the plot, they're going to forget it the moment they get back to putting in the finishing touches to their fantroll.

Maybe that's why hussie pulled the top bracket.

He was afraid they might have 10,000 just laying around.

I thought it was because he started to feel bad about people wanting to put down 10k just to probably get offed in in their single panel.

A darn shame, because free money with incentives is still free money.

In all seriousness, I don't think he seriously thought anybody would give that much. When he got nervous people were going to keep at this, he likely realized he doesnt' want to make 3-10 canon fantrolls.

2 is enough to manage and kill quickly.

That or he feels guilty enough that he actually wants to let the fantrolls last like, 3 pages, and doesn't want to bog this down with them.

Which I respect. I normally hate "put your character in if you donate!" bullshit. The only reason I didn't say hussie jumped the shark is my assumption that he will still kill them promptly, which he did heavily imply.

IME some really shitty tv shows have amazing fandoms. I'll admit there are one or two (five) fandoms I participate in that IDGAF about the source material for.

In one memorable case I fell in love with a fandom and when I was finally able to get around to watching the source material I couldn't make it through the pilot. I tried four different episodes and then just gave up.

I do spend more time than the average fan educating myself about the characterizations/back stories for those fandoms though.

I'm not confessing which fandoms I'm talking about btw.
