Pretty much this. If the person can't afford the console and game, or doesn't have time to play the game or whatever, than I don't see what's wrong with watching an LP and then getting involved in the fandom. It's a bit different yes, and they might've not experienced the game exactly in the way it was originally meant to be experienced, but if they enjoy the story and the characters (etc etc), I don't see what the problem is.

A cousin of mine watched me play Portal a while back. I offered to let her play herself, but she didn't want to; she just wanted to watch. She seemed to enjoy it.

I personally would rather play myself because I find it fun, but someone watching an LP is going to get the same amount of information out of the game re: storyline and characters as one playing it would, and maybe that's the only part they care about?
