This.

Fanfiction is not bad just by virtue of being fanfiction. I find a lot of trash on the local B&N and library bookshelves. Meanwhile, there are some amazing authors that let me keep enjoying my favorite shows and favorite types of stories.

seriously?

I have never found "a lot of trash" in any book store.

fanfiction? hell yeah

self-published? to the extreme

but not a whole lot of "TRASH ZOMG" like losers who feel like they have to justify why they are writing two canonically heterosexuals fucking each other because they're too fucking lazy to write their own original fiction.

It's called the Romance genre. ;)

I would agree there's a lot of bad fanfiction. I'm just saying it's not bad *because* it's fanfiction or that all fanfiction is bad. Part of it is accessibility. The only reason is probably doesn't feel as overwhelming as fanfic is because bookstores need to pack what sells (though arguably that doesn't mean quality) but it does thin the herd somewhat (slightly. Yes, I struggle to find contemp authors I enjoy. I have them, but they are few). There's nothing to do that for self-publish or fanfic other than word of mouth. I'm just saying that to write it all off is a little short-sighted and naive. My favorite is when I've found published authors (who write wonderful books) who also happen to write fanfic in a favorite fandom... ;) The treat is doubly mine then.

I'm just saying, don't judge a book (or a wordfile) by its cover ;)

I don't write slash because I'm too lazy to write original fiction. I have no desire to write original fiction at all ever. I write slash and other fanfiction because it's a fun hobby.

And yeah, I've seen a lot of trash in some book stores.

As someone who used to work in a bookstore, there is a TON of shitty stuff in bookstores. Formulaic romances, tired sci-fi tie-in series, 927490 westerns with the same plot, plodding Christian fiction, poorly written books for children by writers who think they can ignore basic prose quality when writing to a younger audience. Not to mention how much of any general interest bookstore's business is faddy self-help books. Just because it's published and makes money doesn't mean it's not trash.

I also imagine I would disagree with your definition of "canonically heterosexual", but that's a different argument.

Whoops! Your bias is showing.

And yeah - trash at bookstores. Pick up a random sci-fi or fantasy book and it's practically identical to the *other* random sci-fi or fantasy book you just picked up, or that you looked at last month.

As well as total crap about cooking for your aura or kids books with hidden bigotry disguised as religious instruction or romance novels that are practically find/replace on names from book to book....

i dunno....i recently went to a library to find something to read, and decided to just randomly pick some books off the bookshelf. i chose 5 books from different genres and checked them out. all of them were awful, no exception. and i mean objectively awful, not just that i didn't find them interesting. granted, i can't remember if i've ever read a fanfic that was actually really good (publishable). but it's kind of in the nature of fanfiction, which is very indulgent.

anyway, if anybody HAS read really amazing fanfiction, i would love some recs.

I have read some really amazing fanfiction, which is why the whole the "Fanfic is crap. Read a real fucking book," sentiment burns me so bad. YMMV, but here are few fics that I think are better than some published things I've read.

(I like sci-fi so you'll see a common theme, I think.)

Star Trek XI (Kirk/Spock)

The Lotus Eaters by aldora89 (94k words)

Leave No Soul Behind by whochick (259k words; technically an AU)

Harry Potter

Getting the Hang of Thursdays by Hayseed ( novel length; gen-ish, Snape and Hermione-centric)

Tbh, I could rec A LOT of HP fics that are fabulous. That one is the most gen. If you are interested in Snape/Harry-- and, that part of fandom has a lot of great writers, imo-- then I can rec some more.

The Avengers

Every Judas Loved His Jesus by Croik (130k; Loki/Steve)

Shadow Plays by dreamlittleyo (25k; Loki/Thor)

My SO, who used to think all fanfic was crap as well, seconds my rec of those last two.

Earth 2

The Children of Earth and Air (71k; gen-ish, Morgan and Alonzo-centric)

An obscure fandom, but a great fic. You probably need to know the canon though.

I hope you enjoy a few of those.
