Uh no. Saying "my brother found this level super hard!" Isnt the same.

Unless you are saying they can just lie. In which case I suppose so but how pathetic is that?

Lying in this day and age is so pointless. I mean, we pretty much knew who the non-players were in the DMC fandom just by inference and observation, but these days all you'd have to do is ask for their Live ID or their PSN username, then look at their trophies/achievements. Trophies/achievements even sync with the master server so there's no "lol I deleted my save". We live in an age where you can reasonably demand put up or shut up. After all, why wouldn't you want to share your online account with your online friends? Then you could play the game you love together!

I guess you could give them your brother's ID. But jig will be up the moment you message him for a game of co-op, if not sooner when you see that they have like every installment of Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield platinumed when your friend has never once mentioned ever playing an FPS.

No, these days I suppose you have to just come out and fess.

I agree there's no reason to lie but I would like to say that not every gamer is into the online aspect. I spend enough of my time playing video games and I try to stay away from the online aspect for that very reason, the only time I play with friends is if we decide to play together in person, but that's rare as not all my friends are gamers.

I've given people ids before but it usually ends up being useless because I'm never online. Plus I only got wireless internet this year so hooking my systems to the internet before now was a pain.

I mean I never claim to be a hardcore gamer, but do play games and me not wanting to play online doesn't mean I haven't played them.

Naw, but you don't have to be online for other people to see your achievements/trophies. They're available to view by anybody who has your ID at any time. They auto-sync to the server, and they're permanent. You can't lose them. Or fake them.

I just think keeping up the pretense that you've played a game you haven't would be a very elaborate ruse to keep up these days - a lot harder than it would have been in the past. Refusing to give out your ID to literally anyone in your entire fandom, even just for messaging, would be... pretty suspect. I guess you could do it by saying you're anti-social and afraid of harassment, or never play online and don't want to chat online with anyone ever either not even your friends, but... ...huh that would be weird and harder to maintain than in the old days.

I mean for sure I have plenty of friends who game but don't like the multiplayer - they still give out their IDs to friends so we can chat and compare score. There's a huge difference between "I don't like to play the online mode" and "I refuse to give you my ID for... ...reasons".

I don't generally chat over online gaming systems either though. It's not that I refuse to give my id, like if someone is really determined I can give them my id, but I just don't take use of the online systems at all so I usually just don't give friends my information anymore. I have friends that do use the online chats, but as I said not all my friends are gamers and even with those that are I just tend to tell them that I'm too busy to really keep up with the online aspects of games (which I usually am) and they can respect that.

I'm also an introvert and for me games are sometimes a way to get away from people, so even though I talk to people about the games I like the social aspect usually doesn't come until after I've beaten the game. I don't like comparing scores or the competitive aspect of gaming either, for me gaming is a stress relief and getting competitive about it would just make my stress worse.

I just wouldn't automatically suspect people of not playing games just because they don't want to be overly involved with the online fandom.

Lol I'm not saying anyone would "suspect" them, I'm saying that eventually somebody's going to see your trophy/achievements list unless you refuse to give out your ID, ever, and if you're super active in a given game fandom but have no data or trophies/achievement's for that game the cat's out of the bag.

Which was very different from how it used to be, was my point. Not that I "suspect" people are non-players or anything (in my experience it's usually pretty obvious anyway - though most people are polite enough not to say so - so if you did play but just didn't want to give out your ID, I doubt anyone would "suspect" anything at all).
