Gameplay is part of the story. It's integral to the feeling and the atmosphere. The joy is in how they all work together.

And games are fun. I have no idea why somebody would be so adamant not to play them.

^This. I don't get upset if people start writing fanfic or whatever if their only exposure is through LPs or wikis or watching cutscenes, but I can't fathom how it can be as enjoyable as playing through a game on your own.

And there's so many games where my feelings and reactions were influenced by my own personal experience when playing through it. Like, sure, you can watch someone fight a boss through a LP but you're simply viewing another person's experience and reaction. All of the emotions that come from preparing and actually struggling to beat that boss are lost. That stuff may not be important in writing fanfic or drawing fanart but to me it's important when talking about characters or the emotional impact of certain scenes. My gameplay experience influences how I react to those things, I like talking about how/why that happens, and when someone says that's not important to them, I lose a lot of interest in the discussion.

I would never tell a person to GTFO because they didn't play the game, but I do actively avoid those kinds of fans, because I don't think we have much in common.

This is slightly different than LPs, but personally I really enjoyed watching my sister play through Final Fantasy VII and VIII over a couple of summers to the point where I didn't feel the need to play through them myself, even though I enjoy rpgs. It started out with me waiting my turn, but I got absorbed enough in what was going on through her eyes, even though we have pretty different playstyles and I wasn't always paying 100% attention through her playthroughs, either.

But admittedly, it's a big difference from LPs on YouTube (which wasn't even around then), since the two of us could interact -- joke about characters, or be jazzed at a fancy new spell, or shocked at a plot twist, or consult on a choice screen. Still, though, watching her take on ridiculous bosses instead of me, or making a difficult choice, even if it's not the choice I would have taken, still felt like big things just because I'd played other Final Fantasies and rpgs in general and knew those feelings.

(...I'll also admit I had a lot less patience for the main characters of those games than she did, which probably contributed to feeling like I didn't have to play them :P)

And the gameplay can change your (general you) opinion of characters/stories and more. It gives a completely different perspective.

Just watching a LP/seeing the story is just not the same.

But sure, that may be enough to write a decent fic but... that's it.
