Dentists/Orthodontists

[personal profile] tamabonotchi 2012-09-17 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey f!s I just got back from a teeth cleaning and once again they mentioned me getting a crown for my royally-fucked up tooth and I worry about it.

What's your least favorite part of the dentist/orthodontist? I really hate when they're scrapping the tartar and it sends wave after wave of goosebumps.

All of it

All of it. :( I have serious dentist issues. I didn't go to the dentist for well over a decade because we had no insurance, and I've always struggled with gingivitis/sensitive gums, so it just hurts. Now that we do have insurance and go regularly, it hurts much less than it did five years ago when I first started going again, but *shudders*. Prob my least fave medical thing you have to regularly do.

I can't really decide between the taste of the polish that makes my face squinch or the flossing that tears my gums apart. Probably the flossing. Because pain.

Flossing, god yes.

And I have receding gums so if they aren't careful, I wish for death.

Have you tried the baking soda wash thing? I like it so much more than the polishing. Basically, they put a washcloth over your face because it goes everywhere, but they spray your teeth down with a baking soda wash thing. No polishing. No horrible grindy sound. No nasty polish taste. I am a fan.

Every last bit of it. I had serious mouth trauma when I was younger which resulted in many painful dentist visits/surgeries/weird mouth gear.

I love getting my teeth cleaned. If I could afford to do it once a month I would.

I'm probably biased because my first dentist appointment was when I was thirteen and I've never had a cavity or a serious issue so I don't have negative associations and I have a thing for oral hygiene.

I saw a dentist regularly as a kid, but otherwise pretty much this for me too.

Oh yay! I also love getting my teeth cleaned, and always get weird looks when I tell people that. It's just so satisfying and my teeth feel all clean and sparkly after.

Measuring my gum pockets. I didn't go to the dentist for almost fourteen years (ages 21-35) because I was so terrified, and it left me with a "moderate" case of gum disease. I'm always scared to death my measurements will be bad, especially when I've been putting off the appointment for a while.

It makes me sad, too, because when I was a kid dentists would always tell me how beautiful my gums were. And I ruined them! Ruined!

But I do really like my new dentist. She's very nice and has never yelled at me even a little bit. The hygienist, too. I get disappointed if they have the day off when I come in.

I mostly love my dentist and his practice since I've been going there since I was five, but I recently had a filling on one of my front-most teeth and the 'wedge' they had to stick in there hurt terribly.

Though that wasn't nearly as bad as almost everything at the orthodontists'. No love for that place, ever.

Since I don't have a consistent dental plan, I haven't been to the dentist in three years. I loved going to the dentist. :(

I hated fluoride and having to bite the vacuum straw thing to keep it in place though. Oh, and the scrapey tool thing too I guess because of that goosebump thing you mentioned.

Gagging. The gag reflex is strong with this one; x-rays usually involve the hygienist/assistant sprinting to take the shot before I accidentally cough the mouthpiece across the room.

I had braces for years - worst dentist visit was when I was finally done and they had to yank every little square off of my teeth and sand away the glue. It was unpleasant.

That said, I'd rather a dentist appointment over an appointment with the eye doctor any day of the week. I'm a big baby when it comes to eyes.

How bad is your tooth?

my least favourite part is when the dentist comes to tell me if anything is/isn't wrong with my teeth. i got used to the orthodontist after going every month and i put up with the cleaning at the dentist nowadays, but i dread the possibility of the dentist telling me i have cavities.

I actually love and hate going to my dentist.

I hate it because my teeth and gums suck no matter how much attention I give them.

But I love it because my dentist is the sweetest lady ever. I love talking to her and catching up. If it wasn't weird to ask because of our age difference and me being her patient I would so ask to hang out with her at other times.

The feeling of cotton in my mouth. I can take the pain, the blood, the metal stuff poking around in there, but the taste/sensation of the cotton swabs and/or balls they shove in there makes me gag.

i don't mind the dentist, but i do mind when they ask me a question while they're in my mouth and i physically can't answer them. like why would you even...

Blech, I have a missing tooth, and my dentist and orthadontist have been talking about me getting an implant for years now. Except they can never seem to get the gap right, so it's just been braces after braces after braces. It's gotten to the point where I really don't give a damn anymore.

I REALLY hated the orthodontist and the pain involved (there was one part where they had to have me bite down to get an expander thing on the roof of my mouth and it was awful!).

Worst part of all time was when I got my wisdom teeth out. I got those out about 3 years ago and I still have nerve damage in my mouth. Ugh.

I don't really mind the dentist or orthodontist. I have braces right now and most of it has been manageable.

The worst part so far, though? When I had my first appointment and they made a mold of my teeth. Horrible. The tray they put in my mouth, and the stuff they used to make the mold, gagged me horribly. And the stuff tasted terrible. And worst of all, the mold got stuck in my mouth and the technician had a hard time getting it out.

But in general, the worst part of dental appointments is having to keep my mouth open wide. I have some TMJ issues (the reason for the braces) and it used to be a lot more severe. Sometimes I can't open my mouth wide without feeling like it's going to get stuck like that, so it's hard to keep it open for a while without periodically closing it.

Kind of everything, but mostly the cleaning thing where they use that grinder or something? It fucking HURTS and I swear they don't believe me because my teeth are fine and all. Just check my fucking teeth without the stupid grinder.

I've been to the dentist a total of 5 or 6 times. 2 of them painful. I'm thinking of going again at the end of the year because it looks like Medicare FINALLY covers it. Shit is pricey.

wisdom tooth removal was terrifying. They had to be removed after they'd been properly grown out for years and I've only been to the dentist like 6 times in my life. I was terrified of the pain and the needles in my mouth and opening my mouth to let someone rip my teeth out. What if the sneezed and cut my tongue in half?
I'd never even had local painkiller before so I was worried it wouldn't block out all the pain.

Thank fuck I only had 2 wisdom teeth to removed.

Having them grind one of my teeth down was also concerning, but not as terrifying since they weren't cutting me open in my mouth (I chipped it in half to the ?quick?. My options were get it capped and buy new caps every few years or just get the jagged edges ground away. I figured the latter was cheaper in the long run and declined the local pain stuff because expensive)
