"Retarded"

So I'm in a guild in a MMO and for the most part everyone's cool. But this new guy keeps using the word retarded. "That boss was retarded." "They nerfed the warrior now it's just retarded." "Finding enough carrots is so hard it's retarded." etc

It really bothers me. I'm not sure what to do about it. I don't want to be seen as that that PC/SJW uptight annoying person, but I also don't want him to continue with the word. Should I Whisper/PM him and mention it? Mention it to another guildie and see if it bothers anyone else? Leave it alone?

I just don't know. I want to stand up but also don't want to make anyone else uncomfortable in any way. But if I were using words people in the guild found offensive I'd want to know so I could stop unknowingly upsetting people. Advice would be welcome.

If it upsets you, confront him about it. I grew up being called "retarded" in elementary school, and it stuck. It also hurt a lot, and it affected my self confidence for years. If something honestly upsets you, it doesn't make you a SJW. Trust me.

Personally, I would reply in the same channel and say something like "hey, do you mind not using that word? Call it stupid or absurd or ___, but "retarded" is a word I'd rather not see while I'm trying to have fun," and that gives you a chance to make up alternate words. At one point, I had a guild trained to say "steak dinner" instead of "rape," because I kept objecting politely every time someone slipped, and I explained why it bothered me in a fairly calm manner. And hey, "We got steak dinnered by that boss" sounds a heck of a lot funnier!

Depending on what happens, you'll either settle it right there, or know if you might want to talk to the GM or officers and have someone make a ruling on language. If you've got some tenure with the guild, especially if you're someone who everyone knows, you contribute to the guild, etc, then they'll probably ask you for an explanation, but take your complaint seriously. If you're both new, it'll be tougher.

Good luck; there's some seriously awesome guilds out there, but there's just as many that aren't. Issues like this tend to show you pretty quickly which one you've got.
