"...sad face blind people..."

I highly doubt I am, or have actual prosopagnosia, but I seriously do have trouble with faces that don't have features that stick out to me, or aren't on people I'm seeing every day. Finding "race-specific" features is kind of also hard for me, the most I can kind of do is narrow down maybe sometimes the continent :(

My sisters can apparently differentiate between a Mexican, a Chilean, and an Ecuadorian, or everyone from Central America apparently. I don't have this skill.
The little sister is always claiming to me how she can also totally get which East Asian person is from where though, so she might actually be able to relate to you?

I can tell where an East Asian person is from. Sometimes, I can even tell which part of China a person is from. What worked for me was seeing a lot of pictures of people from a target region (TV news reports and National Geographic magazines were my favs, I was a weird kid k?). Classical art helped too because often they'd emphasize certain features so I notice them easier on people.

Often it is an individual facial feature, like a chin or a set of eyes, that set my region ID off. "She as the same chin and eyes as Anna. I bet she's Italian." Or "Sam looks more like Manuel than Jackie, so he's probably Philippino and not Taiwanese."

Here's an "averaged" set of pictures showing women from different countries. Think of a close female friend, someone whose face you're very familiar with and find the woman from your friend's country. See if you can see bits of your friend in the averaged picture. Maybe you're not as bad at recognizing countries as you think.

WHOA

This is a really cool article. While I don't think I'm quite yet ready to accost strangers in public and shout their current or ancestral roots at them, I may just be able to keep up with (and show up!?) my sister next time.

I doubt you can always 100% tell. No one can always tell. There are people here in Japan who pass as ethnically Japanese for decades despite being Chinese or Korean because not even people in the countries themselves can always tell.

There are definitely features that belong more to one ethnicity than another, but there's also always going to be a little overlap.

"More than 100 women of 41 different nationalities and ethnicities"

Are you kidding me? That's two to three women per grouping. Not really a balanced regional average.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read the article and I understood it as the pictures of the women from each group averaged out, not that a balanced regional average was represented.

It's interesting how people don't interpret the same words the same way.
