Where are they from? Most of the times, I can't even know whether they're male or female.

Really? I've never found it hard, and I'm not of any Asian heritage myself.

My grandfather thinks all Asians are Chinese. All of them. My little sister's life currently revolves around k-pop. This more often than not results in epic "Little Sister vs. Grandfather" blowouts. It's always hilariously offensive.

Ooh! Interesting! And here I thought I was just a dumb white girl.

Seriously, though, what an interesting read. Thanks for sharing!

I feel like that is really, really biased by the fact that most people are raised by people who are of the same race as them. If your family is vastly made up of people of the same race, you're going to have a greater need to differentiate just to be able to tell who you're looking at. I wonder if there are any studies on children adopted by people of different races being better or worse at identifying their own races.

"...sad face blind people..."

I highly doubt I am, or have actual prosopagnosia, but I seriously do have trouble with faces that don't have features that stick out to me, or aren't on people I'm seeing every day. Finding "race-specific" features is kind of also hard for me, the most I can kind of do is narrow down maybe sometimes the continent :(

My sisters can apparently differentiate between a Mexican, a Chilean, and an Ecuadorian, or everyone from Central America apparently. I don't have this skill.
The little sister is always claiming to me how she can also totally get which East Asian person is from where though, so she might actually be able to relate to you?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
I can tell where an East Asian person is from. Sometimes, I can even tell which part of China a person is from. What worked for me was seeing a lot of pictures of people from a target region (TV news reports and National Geographic magazines were my favs, I was a weird kid k?). Classical art helped too because often they'd emphasize certain features so I notice them easier on people.

Often it is an individual facial feature, like a chin or a set of eyes, that set my region ID off. "She as the same chin and eyes as Anna. I bet she's Italian." Or "Sam looks more like Manuel than Jackie, so he's probably Philippino and not Taiwanese."

Here's an "averaged" set of pictures showing women from different countries. Think of a close female friend, someone whose face you're very familiar with and find the woman from your friend's country. See if you can see bits of your friend in the averaged picture. Maybe you're not as bad at recognizing countries as you think.

Are we pretending you can tell here?

Like come on. It's akin to saying you can tell the difference between a german, english, or american white person at a glance.

Alternative post, here I found some reference material to help them.

It's not quite the same thing. The majority of White Americans are of German, Irish, and/or English descent. It'd be way easier to tell the difference between Han Chinese and ethnic Koreans. Way more homogeneity.

My god, why don't you just jump off a cliff? You are such a waste of air.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-09-17 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It took me a sad amount of time to realize you didn't mean "blind people" literally. I was so confused.

I'm not into K-pop or K-idols or whatever. If I had to guess, I'd guess they were all from Earth. Most likely somewhere in Asia, but possibly anywhere on the planet.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe on the country count but I don't think anyone is confused that these people are East Asian. There may be some who look like they might be biracial, but that's about as far as you're gonna get.

But, on that note, a lot of people can't tell the difference between different Western Europeans or Eastern Europeans. There are plenty of Germans who look nothing like the stereotype, many peoples living along the Mediterranean have a fairly consistent look, and plenty of Russians who could pass for numerous European nationalities. You could chalk it up to racism or stereotyping, but there aren't a whole lot of groups that outsiders aren't instantly able to identify correctly based on looks.

. . . I thought K was for Korean? Are there people who are actually confused about this?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wait I don't get what you're saying... Are you saying people assume they're all Korean because stereotypically to people ~all Asians look-a-like~ and their brains just lump them all as Korean? But when you said K-pop doesn't that indeed imply that they are Korean :/ idgi and not trying to be offensive. I genuinely am confused.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-09-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP and I'm not sure what they're talking about but I do know K-pop groups that have ethnically Chinese & Japanese members. It's not even uncommon. There are also k-pop groups with members who were born or grew up in other countries (off the top of my head America and Australia).

OP here

I meant more if people just saw a picture of them, on like a poster or something that the fact that it was a Korean band wasn't obvious.

The reason they all look the same is that they're all overly made-up prettyboys churned out of music producing companies that perfected a merchantable look and stuck with it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 12:52 am (UTC)(link)

I have nothing useful to say about this apart from that has got to be one of my favourite pictures of Sungmin and that you should have used Niel instead of L.Joe if you wanted to weird people out because he looks like he's from nowhere on this planet.
