I'm probably the only person who finds elves to be utterly unsexy. They just seem like the ultimate standoffish prudes. And what, they have kids maybe once a millenium?

They're too pretty to be sexy.

Like fapping to the statues at the Louvre.

They probably have the best birth control, though.

If you go with the assumption that they only have sex to procreate, sure. If you allow that they have active sex lives, though, they'd probably be pretty strict about using protection and not accidentally having kids - it would be irresponsible to have children often if your race is immortal. So I'd assume they would know all of the best prophylactics.

I may have over-thought this.

It's okay, I overthink things all the time. In this case, my brain goes: hmmm, these guys are literally immortal, they don't actually need to procreate to continue their species -- there's no evolutionary advantage to having a high libido. So that leaves sex as means to procreation, which at least would result in a new person to talk to.

Anyway, Sex is actually pretty slimy and gross without mother nature whammying you into enjoying it. The Elves seem to be about as anti dirt and slime as you can get. Sex is also not terribly intellectually stimulating, which is what these people seem to value.

Ergo, (in my head!canon) they probably deign to bump uglies every few years, mostly out of nostalgia, but then they'd rather go back to composing sonnets about events that happened back when they were young and hadn't grown completely bored of life.

Actually, you're not too far from what Tolkien actually said on that - Elves do enjoy sex a whole lot, but tend to lose interest in it after having children and turn those energies to other pursuits instead.

Wait, he said that? Where? /betting it was buried deep in HoMe, which I'll never read.

And I'll hedge my bets on Letters, if I may.

AYRT You win! It was in HoME. You can actually find the essay online - it's at the very bottom of the page here:

Elves don't need to contraception; never have and never will. They have the ability to choose when they conceive.

To be fair, that's a pretty good approach when your race is immortal.

Gotta be rough when you've been there, done that, like 3000 years ago.
