I like Peggy Sues too, but I do have a hard time finding ones that aren't complete crap. I have better luck with Groundhog Day fics (time loop) and What If? Fics, which are both similar in ways to Peggy Sues, but seem to entice more creativity from authors.

The first thing I think about when I heard "Peggy Sue" is of the main character of a serie of french books for children that I liked, it can be a fit confusing.

I like the trope too though and everything that involves time travel.

It's Naruto, isn't it?

I know the plot of the Wave mission and Chuunin exam well enough that I can made a detailed timeline of both events from memory, even though I read the actual manga only once, 7 years ago.

A lot of various fandoms actually, but it was a Tales of Symphonia fic that tipped me over the edge this time.

Have you ever read the Peggy Sue fics by Sarah1281? They're parodies, if you're into that. :)

There's her Harry Potter one- http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4536005/1/Oh-God-Not-Again

and she has a Naruto one too (if either are things you're into.) http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5409165/1/Its-For-a-Good-Cause-I-Swear

neither of them really have to problems that your mentioning- or if they do, there's a reason for it. :)

I completely agree with you, though. I hate it when that happens. :(

I love Peggy Sue fics, too. I have a bunch of Harry Potter ones especially on my favourites list. Actually, they seem to be the only fandom I read wherein those happen a lot, but I still love the hell out of them.

And I gotta say I hate it when nothing gets changed really, too. What's the point? I can understand the characters wanting to keep some things the same if they're concerned about future knowledge, but they wouldn't be perfect on that count, and there should be some insignificant things they do which end up changing things drastically.

Any particular recs from either Harry Potter or any other fandom?

Most are WIPs. All are Harry Potter, I don't have others on my faves list.

Back Again, Harry?, Harry Potter Peggy Sue, goes from near the end of canon right back to near the start. WIP, sort of slow to update.

Nightmares of Future Past, which you have probably heard of already since it's one of the definitive ones!

Furious Angels is a really unusual take on a Peggy Sue. It's quite strongly Harry/Ginny, too.

A Little More Time is not the usual Peggy Sue, it's about Teddy Lupin going back to the final battle to rescue his parents. It's very touching overall.

I'd second the 'Oh God, Not Again!' rec too. It's extremely funny.

So, how far back do they have to go to make it a Peggy Sue story? I've seen a couple which go back a couple of years and make lots of changes.

I did go and check out the tv tropes page and now I have 10 tabs of fic opened up to read! I've had a weakness for this kind of fic since reading Replay, mmm. Thanks OP!
