I don't want to be "this person"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother wants to have me diagnosed for Asperger's Syndrome. I'm really torn about it. I don't have IRL friends I could discuss it with and I'm so wary of discussing this topic with online friends--after all "everyone knows there are no Aspies on the internet, only assholes hiding behind a false disease": what if they believe this bullcrap?

Is your mother a doctor? Even if she is she shouldn't be diagnosing her own family members.

haha I kind of suspect I might be an aspie and I am definitely not an asshole and I barely even talk to people on the internet, let alone tell them my neurological status.
Why does your mother want to do that? Are you in school and maybe going to get extra help or something? I only have one RL friend who is totally on-board with the idea and it's kind of annoying, like she get's some kind of satisfaction from identifying things I do as "look you are rude and awkward and it's not just me- it's science!"
So, I understand how people in your life trying to tell you you have Asperger's Syndrome can be kind of weird.

what on earth could her reasoning be?

What benefits would you gain from a diagnosis? I mean if it helps you in any way (like to get accommodations at school or something like that) or helps you subjectively to understand yourself then go for it, but if the label wouldn't change anything to you then it's pointless.

I recommend the http://www.wrongplanet.net/ page, I know many people on the Internet are just claiming to be something that they are not, but I found it to be a good resource in the past.

Good luck, whichever path do you take. Don't forget that Aspie or not you are still you, and that's what matters.

Mmmkay. Your mom can't actually mail-order a diagnosis, so unless you actually have Aspergers, you're probably fine.

If you do, then you already have it and always have. No big deal. It's a bit like finding out that your hair is more of a chocolate brown than nut brown. Interesting, but still just words.

This, as a reluctant diagnosee.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome a few years back, and honestly, the only difference it's made is I don't have to pay college fees, because I'm classed as having a disability. The only people who know about it are my immediate family, college staff, and my best friend online, because those are the only people who actually need to know. If anyone else thinks I'm an asshole then I'd rather they say 'hey, you're acting like an asshole, cut it out' and not 'oh, she can't help it because of her condition'.
