In general: shipping is usually closely related to being attracted to at least one of the characters involved. The majority of people involved in fandom are more attracted to dudes than they are to women. Ergo, they are much less likely to be into a ship that involves two women.

Obviously neither of these things is an absolute, and there are probably other causes as well, but I think that's broadly the explanation.
