i hear you! i really love girl-centric fantasy ya, but a whole lot of it is "girl has to choose between sweet fantasy dude and mysterious/bad boy fantasy dude" or the like.

some recent reads i liked:

- the princess series by jim c. hines. very minimal hetero romance (some lesbian romance), and one of the main characters is a gay princess of color.

- the killer unicorn series by diana peterfruend. there is a romance subplot that kinda annoyed me at times, but it's not the major plot. main character is white, but ensemble case is very diverse. also, gay girls.

- vN: the first machine dynasty by madeline ashby (this is more futuristic/sci-fi). main female character is white, but main male character is latino (and kinda bisexual), minimal romance.

- i'm sure you've also heard of malinda lo's ash and huntress. i've only read parts of those personally, though.

OMG, yes, Killer Unicorn Chronicles! I love that series sooo much. I want more.

right?! i need a third book! or a longer version of "errant" in which gitta and elise realize their obvious love.

Killer Unicorns is wonderful and I am obsessed with them (I didn't think the romance subplot was annoying either, it actually illustrates a point in the story and isn't just there because "main girl needs love interest")

Ash is also wonderful, but I personally don't recommend Huntress. It was so dull I had trouble finishing it.

yeah no, i think the romance was actually well done for the reason you say, it only annoyed me when it became constant at points. i don't have any complaints about it overall, tho! (well, unless you count "everyone should be a lesbian" as a complaint against it.)

good to know! i read the beginning of huntress in the bookstore once, but wasn't terribly interested and never bought it.

..."Killer Unicorn," you say? I'm interested!

i seriously, seriously love this series and need a third book. i think the ending of the second book was kinda confusing but still overall worth it! virgin girls hunting killer unicorns and lesbians, who can resist?? if you're sensitive about even fictional animals like me, there's some death but it's not too gruesome, and it even brings up the morals of testing on them (with conflicting opinions from "good" characters), etc.
leikomgwtfbbq: (shut up and take my carrots)

Well, I know what I'm looking for on my next bookstore trip!
