I've never heard of Robin McKinley but I'm definitely going to check her out, and Garth Nix is indeed fairly rad. Thx for the recs.

For Robin McKinley, maybe start with her YA novel "Beauty". I love Robin McKinley to little teeny pieces, but her writing style tends to be kinda polarizing. Some people thing "Ughhhhhh too many words, get to the point already, why is nothing HAPPENING?" But for me the language is one of the primary points of attraction. If you like detailed worldbuilding and long winding sentences you will like her. It's about the journey as much as the destination!

Also seconding Diane Duane. Her STar Trek novels are what made me fall in love with her, but her "Young Wizards" series is a really interesting fantasy would that owes a lot to philosophy and science fiction.

The only Robin McKinley books I could ever get into were the Blue Sword books. I loved them a lot and tried to read Beauty and her other stuff but for some reason never could get through them.

I love your description of Robin KcKinley. And now that I think about it, it's well-suited to Diane Duane too - Doctor's Orders, in particular, there were sentences I'd literally re-read ten times in a row before I turned the page because I adored them so much.

Exactly! I read one review of Rose Daughter (my favourite!) that said something about the sentences winding and wandering, with spots of beauty and sharp points like a rose vine.

Doctor's Orders is great, the Rihannsu series is my favourite though! And her Young Wizard series has lots of great points too. :D

If you like beautiful sentences, try China Mieville. He is fantastic.

Also great is Elizabeth Goudge. She's kind of hard to find, a lot of books are out of print, but The Little White Horse is like a huge part of my childhood tht is no less magical now.
