Dad Rock

[personal profile] partialsatyr 2012-09-19 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
i've found that the words "dad rock" always seem to instantly conjure a certain group of musicians in everybody's mind. not necessarily the same ones, but once you read the words "dad rock," you probably start thinking about your dad's favourite bands and chuckling softly to yourself. how very dad-ish they are.

so F!S, how do you define "dad rock"?
for me, tom petty, don henley, and the eagles are classic pillars in the dad rock genre. i know it seems like cheating to use don henley AND the eagles, but just work with me ok

Haaa. My dad listened to a lot of cool stuff and when I was a teenager I raided his music library a lot.

Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac (and Stevie Nicks on her own too), Kim Carnes, Simon and Garfunkel, Rush, David Bowie, and Chris de Burgh are the ones that come to mind.

yeah i gotta admit that my dad's taste in music really shaped mine. well, both of my parents, actually. with my mom it was kind of hit or miss though, whereas i loved pretty much everything my dad listened to.

No worries, using Don Henley and the Eagles is not cheating - artists who go solo are still legit!

For me, I would say the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Wings, Joe Cocker, the Guess Who, and Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

My dad was kind of weird and awesome. He would like classic rock like Zeppelin and Donovan but had excellent taste when it came to picking out new bands. I would be like, "Hey, Pops, have you heard of this new band? They remind me of The Kinks." He would be like, "I just bought their CD." He was always one step ahead of me. So, I was always "borrowing" from his collection.

Definitely not Oingo Boingo, despite my dad actually liking them.

And for me it's mom rock: as in Journey and Van Halen.

Styx, The Police, and Pink Floyd.
