... but the secret is pretty obviously about "real" books, and not fanfiction. I mean, if it were about fanfic, I'd see your point, but when someone is getting frustrated and bored by some sort of consumer-oriented professionally published mass media, the usual response is not to tell people to do it themselves.

Would you tell people who are bored with their video game options for the Wii to go make their own game? No? (I hope the answer is no!) It's really not helpful to to recommend people make their own mass media, unless you also tell people that they should sew their own clothes, make all their own food from scratch, chop wood to make their own homes or for firewood for warmth, make their own healing tinctures for wounds and things, etc etc you get my point. Which is, that people usually already HAVE jobs that make them money. If they are looking to find things to spend that money on to bring them pleasure and are having difficulties, the solution really isn't to tell them that they should entertain themselves by taking on a second unpaid job, especially if the enjoyment is in no way guaranteed in the end.
