Isn't Valdemar about a whiny white boy who goes on adventures though? I mean if it's the one I'm thinking of it has the differentiation of being LGBT, but the main character is a whiny little asshole that I wanted to kick in the face.

You're thinking of a completely different book.

oh, I see that I was thinking of The Last Herald Mage, which I guess actually IS part of the Heralds of Valdemar series but is a sub-series. I didn't realize how confusing that is.
Disregard!

Ok, WHY are you even reading fantasy if you don't like "goes on adventures"?

It's like saying you want to read romance novels but think kissing is icky.

umm I was phrasing my reply in kind to the original secret, which says that YA fantasy is about "boring ass white preteen males who go one wild adventures". Never said I didn't like it (in fact all I said was that I didn't like the main character). Reading comprehension!

omg thank you, thought it was just me

Vanyel is... pretty much the most stereotypical pretty white gay protagonist I can imagine in a medievalish fantasy setting. His love interest dies tragically and gets reincarnated so there's May/December soulmate romance later on. HE INVENTS THE STEEL-STRING GUITAR SO HE'LL HAVE SOMETHING TO STRUM WHILE SINGING MOURNFULLY. I get that he was pretty damned unique back when those books first came out, and yeah he does have his badass moments too, but... oh god I want to retroactively smack myself upside the head for reccing Last Herald Mage everywhere back in the day.
