laptop update

[personal profile] saku 2012-09-19 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
since some of you were interested: i tried installing ubuntu to my laptop via usb but it didn't work. it prompted me to reboot and when i did it showed me the copyright data for the operating system and that was it. apparently it's a common issue but i don't know how to fix it so i'm going to try installing ubuntu with the windows installer.

for those who suggested an OS on a usb - would this work the same way? i'm guessing no but at this point i don't even care, i'm just trying whatever i can because i'm desperate.

Pretty sure the Ubuntu LiveCD on a USB should allow you to load Ubuntu and work with pre-installed programs without installing Ubuntu onto your laptop. All the information is already on the USB.

Have you had any luck in getting a used computer?

i already installed it on my laptop since i've lost all my patience with this thing, but i didn't think to use a livecd. i'll try that if this stops working.

so far i haven't had any crashes today (just a few on startup before i choose to run on ubuntu) but i haven't had any on vista either. on vista after an hour or so every application either crashes or runs "slowly" (and by slowly i mean it loads forever but never finishes) and this is only fixable to my knowledge with a reboot, and that's annoying, but i've had this problem before so i know it's nothing new. ubuntu hasn't done that yet but i haven't been using it enough to assess whether or not it will at some point.

right now i have no internet access on ubuntu because i don't have an ethernet cable and apparently i'm missing the appropriate drivers to run wireless off ubuntu. doesn't make any sense to me since i clearly have them on windows but whatever. in any case i need the internet to install the drivers so i'm sol until i can find an ethernet cable. this shit should not be so complicated, i am far too busy to be fucking around with technology.

re: a used computer - i haven't really been looking since i don't even have $100 or less to spend right now. every cent i have must go to my tuition lol. i'll look eventually though, i'm just trying to stabilise what i have now (but not to much avail, i'm afraid).
