Actually, there was a kerfuffle over this when Justine Larbalestier's Liar came out. It's about a light-skinned half-black girl, who is still supposed to look obviously mixed-race, and the first proof of the cover had the whitest white girl ever. Justine posted about it on her blog (just in an "I'm disappointed" kind of way) and so many people wrote to Bloomsbury pointing out it was wrong that they redid the cover (now it looks like this). Also from her and co-author Sarah Rees Brennan, Team Human, whose protagonist is explicitly Chinese in both novel and cover. (lol I sound like I'm her publicist or something but I'm not! I just really appreciate things like this.)
