I know that at least Anne McCaffrey and Terry Pratchett wrote novels for YA category, that belonged more or less to the world of their "adult" novels.

Apparently, the difference between YA and adult novels is that the protagonist has to be a kid or a teenager, and that there's no explicit sex. But some authors don't throw in sex in their novels even when they write adult novels, so...
