Since this thread has developed into a 'rec-good-YA-fantasy' thread (which I am so bookmarking, btw), here's my 2 cents.

The Sweep series by Cate Tiernan is pretty good, the main character is mostly in love with someone and trying to make the relationship work but there's so much more to her character than that. It's just something else that's new in her life, if that makes sense. I really enjoyed this.

Diane Duane has also been mentioned, but I'm just seconding the hell out of that. Her Young Wizards series is amazing.

E. Rose Sabin also has good books, although I cannot remember the name of the series. Once again, there's love in it but it's not the main thing.

Uhm, Darren Shan has always held my attention very well, but it's been a while since I read that so I'm not 100% sure it's not a 'boy goes on big adventure' story.

A little more mature, but Kelley Armstrong isn't bad. It's also not good, but if you want some brainless entertainment (like, really brainless, during test weeks or something) she's alright.
