Ugh, I know that feel. My boyfriend and his mother are both my FB friends and they are both, yep, you guessed it: militant vegetarians. I probably see 10+ graphic animal abuse pictures per day. I'm not FB savvy enough to know how to get rid of it without them knowing, though.

If you hover over the picture or whatever you'll see a little menu icon in the corner. You can "hide" the picture with an option to Hide All from that person or just that one image. When you do this, and when you "unfriend" someone, they don't know about it. No messages are sent.
