Chill.

I think you are wrong. It's not enough to be a POC or other minority to catch people's attention. Imagination doesn't work like that. You have to have a personality that catchs people's attention.

People ship Stiles because he's an energetic, emotionally dynamic character, who has a strong voice, and an easy to relate to backstory. He reacts strongly to his environment. That makes him the character equivalent of a shiny, amusing object. Derek makes a good straight man: dark, broody, intense. They play well off of each other. This is a popular dynamic in a lot of fandoms -- the straight man and the clown.

Het combos -- well, het. You aren't going to get slash shippers in a slash generous fandom to write het (though there is a fair amount as side pairings)

Boyd -- spoke, what, three words all season 2 and got to look menacing by Derek's side twice. Writing him is like writing an OC. I realize there was a conflict between the actors schedule that made giving him much screen time problematic, but still, Alison's mom got more to show more personality.

Danny -- I have seen fics shipping Danny fairly frequently. But even there, apparently from the rumors Danny's actor was difficult to work with and thus didn't get much of a role. He's vastly underutilized in the show, and has almost no lines. Sometimes that happens. Other than kind of being there to occasionally play straight man to either Stiles or Scott, he just doesn't pop with personality. So again, writing him is a bit like writing an original character.

I still don't understand why there isn't any Stiles/Scott, TBH.

Honestly, my guess is that fan writers have a tough time getting a handle on Scott's personality. He tends to be written OOC as being either stupider than a box of bricks or else malicious trending to evil (I really have no idea where that came from.) Apparently sometimes earnest, sometimes dreamy with occasional bouts of wolf-induced psychosis is just too inconsistant or something.

That seems to make more sense than just fans throwing up their hands and saying Allison is too canon (like when has that ever stopped slashers in the past ) or "they are too much like brothers" because brothercest is a big kink in a lot of fandoms.

People may have tried Scott/Stiles, only to find that they just couldn't get the dynamic to work in an interesting way. It's hard to tell, because we only see the fics that get posted, not the bunnies that run through people's heads.

I like Scott, but I've never really liked shipping best friends all that much. I'd much rather see fics showcasing their friendship

I could get behind some Scott/Isaac though. They had some good moments together. tbh though, I actually like Scott/Allison (even with the stupid romeo and juliet thing they have going on)

They are like brothers, so while I love their friendship, I can't ship them. Their brotherly relationship isn't full of tension like Sam and Dean's (though okay I've seen like ten episodes of SPN so I could be talking out of my ass here), so it doesn't have any sort of sexiness to it. They act like kids around each other, probably because they are kids.

I'm also not big on shipping Scott with anyone other than Allison, though I ship Allison with other characters (need moar Allydia pls :D). I can't get into Scisaac either, despite me understanding that one more and even thinking it kind of cute.

One of my absolute favorite Teen Wolf stories is Scott/Stiles: Close Up by [archiveofourown.org profile] LolaFeist (Warning: underage). But it's not romantic at all, so I don't know how much it would appeal to a Scott/Stiles shipper.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-20 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
In my case, I don't ship anyone with Scott because I find him the least interesting character. I try to pretend he's not there for anything but plot (in fanfics)

Everyone else I ship with everyone else.

Of course PoC don't have personalities, they have color though, so what more do they want?

Personalities, duh.

A++

And the reason why Boyd has about two lines in the series? If he were another pretty white boy he would have been much more fleshed out.

Actually, the reason he wasn't fleshed out more was because his actor had other engagements and wasn't reliably available play his part. So the writers didn't make very many scenes he'd be central to, because you really can't screw around with production schedules that much.

Believe it or not, Teen Wolf was actually a fairly low profile show on specialty channel before it broke through. The actor had better offers.

"It's not enough to be a POC or other minority to catch people's attention."

Um. What? I don't think anyone's claiming that, and I find that statement a little offensive.

Moving on, though. Canon Stiles is a great character worthy of tons of fanfic, except there is next to no fanfiction that is true to Stiles' character. In fact, it seems to me like most people write Stiles a lot like Scott actually is, except incredibly "uke-fied", as someone else very astutely pointed out.

Regarding your comment on people not being able to get a handle on Scott's personality and writing him OOC, I call bullshit and laziness. I'm sorry.

As far as other characters who only have two lines go, one could argue that Derek doesn't do much more than stand around and look menacing too. Also, I call bullshit again, because there have been numerous incidents of people writing a bajillion fics with characters that appeared once, or were even just mentioned (Greenberg hasn't appeared on screen in Teen Wolf and yet he gets talked about more than any ship involving Scott, for example). People fangirl over Boyd and Erica and Isaac and Deaton and Danny, they say over and over how awesome those people are, they post gifs and quotes, and yet they never write fic about them. There's obviously something else like lack of enthusiasm about the characters going on.

And in any case, no one is blaming people for writing about Stiles, like I said, he IS an intriguing character. What people are complaining about is, one, that he is the only fucking person people write about, and two, that Stiles fans distort his character, ignore his flaws and mistakes, present him as a "perfect precious angel" as OP said, demand to see more of him even though he has more than his fair share of screen time, and spew venom about every other character on top of that.

And you know what? I am sick and tired of people telling me (and everyone who shares my opinion) that we are exaggerating, that we are seeing things that aren't there, that we need to "chill", that there ALWAYS is some reason completely unrelated to sexism and racism that makes people not write about women and POC. It happens again and again and again, show after movie after book, and there is ALWAYS an excuse. So, whatever. You can keep saying it to convince yourself, but I'll never be convinced that it's all just one big coincidence again.

Yeah, welp, not much point in discussing this with you, but I did read what you wrote.

Edited for clarity.

this is late at this point, but i didn't think the OP seemed worked up at all, so it was kind of a dick move to open by telling them to chill, especially when you went on to write a novel in response.
